Trapped in a dead end job that is ruining my life?

We Answered:

Honey, you need more money!! Insetad of languishing in a crummy low paying job that you hate and which is putting you in the poor house, why don't you find 2 part time jobs that don't make you depressed. Look online or in the paper for ANY JOB. You might see something you never considered before. How about Starbucks or Target or a bookstore? Some of them seem pretty happy. Your major is education. Can you tutor college students? Put up professional looking fliers at a local college or university. Or let friends and neighbors know you are available for tutoring and charge a reasonable hourly rate that is based on your education and experience. (Like $20 hr. CASH ONLY). Get out of that job you're in now. Don't think you are stuck. Good luck.

Should I quit my dead end job or am I stuck here forever?

A lot of temp agencies are hiring for a predetermined amount of time, and employers are reluctant to hire on full time. With this last recession there is no way of knowing when something big will hit again, and it costs a lot to the company to hire someone full time than it would to keep them as a temp. As far as making more on unemployment - as long as you are offered a position, if you don't take it you lose your benefits. Even if the temp agency offers you a job picking rock all day in the hot afternoon sun at six dollars a day - you can't refuse work.

My advice to you is to get out of that temp job as soon as possible. Finish your class and try to find something else in your field. Temp agencies always spell trouble - they always have horrid benefits, low pay, and poor service. Sure you won't get unemployment benefits, but at least you will have your pride, and to me pride is worth a whole lot more than eight bucks an hour.

You'll find a way to make it through. Maybe try selling some stuff and moving back in with your parents or with a friend for a while. Finish your last class, and maybe take some more. Get a fresh start and rethink your future. Don't spend the next year or two falling behind on bills, digging into deeper debt and then not being able to get out.
