Staffing agencies can be okay, you go in usually take tests (depending on the type of job you are applying for), and they call you when something becomes available. You are often paid on a weekly basis, directly from the staffing agency. I mean its a cool temporary way to work, and sometimes the business you are working with will offer you a permanent position.

You and about a million other people in the LA area. All you can do right now is apply at several temp agencies and hope one assignment turns into a full time job.

Sure - it's even possible that they didn't have an opening but were fishing for resumes that they could send out to companies. Agencies do all sorts of things depending.
