Forever 21 post interview?

We Answered:

wow im so sorry that must be hard! its hard enough having the courage to go on interviews and then to be rejected like that.. im ur age too. struggling to find a job I dont know what to say other than that must make you feel REALLY rejected thats how I would feel anyway. I BET they hired her on bc they felt sorry for her it seems like if your a screw up in life you get alot more in return its very backwards too me. I would definitely call the manager and ask why you weren't considered it cant hurt! and hey at least your looking for a job and trying to get one as best as you know how. dont take what other people say to heart if the manager is rude she's probably just one of those girls...PLEASE just move on and look for jobs at other stores with the economy right now you cant be too dead set on anything you have to take what you can get. and there is a good possibility she thought you were being cocky especially if she's in your age group...girls are very catty im sure you know that. im sure your hurt by the situation but the only thing u can do is look for another job it'll come dont give up hope ever another job will swoop you up. But I'd be very confused by that situation also especially if there always hiring im really sorry have a good day!

Virginia residence: Do you feel like the state has a mission to victimize people?

We Answered:

Considering the fact that I got called "Extremely Simple Man" by the Communist-Wealth of Virginia back in 2004 due to my disability. I was than told by these same *ssholes that "You need to stick to jobs you know how to do", meaning cleaning up after the "normal people of society", without ever seeing my resume I have to say "Yes."

I just wished I had as much on my portfolio back than as I do now. That is fine because I had the last laugh because this very same b*tch that called me this lost her job after I faxed my resume, a 2-page letter demanding an apology, and the letter were I was called "An extremely simple man" for an total of over 30 pages straight to the Governor of Virginia. I also faxed those same 30+ pages to my state congressman, my state senator, and Workman's Comp Board. This b*tch with the Virginia Department of Workman's Comp called me "Simple" due to my disability and I proved to her how difficult I really can be.

When looking for work, isn't it always best to go through an employment agency?

We Answered:

90% of jobs are found through networking.

That means, only 10% through advertisements, agencies and so on. And that is also what most people try, because it seems easy. So you have a lower chance against more applicants.

Getting a job through networking could start with working out in which industry and job you want to work. Then you could contact someone in that industry and ask her if you can have 20 minutes of her time for an Informational Interview. People are really happy to do this, if your intention is good, because they have been there themselves, and also it's flattering to be asked advice.

You can Google 'Informational interviewing' to learn more about how to do it. From there you might try Work Shadowing (you spend a day or half a day seeing what someone actually does, without expecting pay - it's a favour to you). In this process you learn about what's really involved, and make contacts who will care about you. You don't ask them for a job, their help is letting you peek inside a job or industry. Once they know you and have your CV, they may pass on opportunities.

Joining business networks works well. For instance, a coffee group. People meet you in person, and if they hear what you can do and that you are looking, they may know of someone who wants an employee like you. It's essential you get a personal business card made to give people you meet. This can be at a low cost. At least your name, phone numbers, email and city or address. Make it look smart. Without a card, it's difficult for people to take action after meeting you. At business coffee groups you will also interact with business owners.

Another type of network is Industry Associations of the industry in which you hope to work. Remember, networking is about relationships, not asking for things. You just take an interest in others, and let it know what they can do to help you, without asking directly. They will help of their own accord.

Lastly, consider a combination Skills-based and Chronological CV. This is more effective than a typical chronological CV, because the focus is on what you can offer, and it starts with a summary rather than boring address and other irrelevant details. That can be in a footer. You need to focus on what matters to the employer.

Good luck, and get yourself out there. :)

Am I old fashioned because I don't know how to scan?

We Answered:

A bit unprofessional of them to say that, but the cold truth is that times have changed. It is good to try and keep up. Scanning a document and sending it is a lot faster and it's not like you risk your important documents getting lost in the post or delayed for any reason. Scanning is very very easy to do and I find it a lot easier. You can get scanners quite cheap these days. You buy it once and that's it.

Which is the resume distribution service that you would recommend?

We Answered:

Do not pay to have your resume distributed. Just reply to the ads you see with an email (not a fax) and POST your resume online (monster.com, careerbuilder.com, hotjobs.com) Its free and thousands of employers can access the resumes.

Discuss It!
