Why do I have to choose between "unusual" hair and "normal" job?

We Answered:

I had to sacrifice my pink hair too for a job. http://photos-f.ak.facebook.com/photos-a… (Look what I lost!)

I used to have it at the back and underneath and covered it with black on top so you never really saw it. I was working for M&S and then one day they decided they were having none of it and I had to have natural hair (I was in a small branch in a town mostly full of the elderly, and some of our regular customers thought it was really sad that I had to dye it all the same colour!). So i went straight out and had my lip pierced as their uniform permits 1 facial piercing.

I now work for an internet retailer and there's no dress code at my office - so if i wish to, i'm free to dye my hair any colour I choose. The only reason I don't is because I do a fair bit of theatre, and the constant bleaching, dyeing natural to cover it for when i'm on stage, then bleaching it etc etc is wrecking my hair, so it's staying roughly natural for the time being. Might go burgundy red again before xmas.

But sadly most offices do have a dress code of some sort, and in interviews, people will judge you by your appearance and make assumptions about the type of person you are based on something as superficial as hair colour. Sucks, I know. But you may find that some places are quite relaxed about appearances - go to an interview, and if you like the job, take it. Once you've been there a few months and settled, ask your boss if they'd object to you changing your hair colour.

Job related question?

We Answered:

Go for it! What's the worst that could happen, them saying no. Just be honest and sincere. Maybe you could email them first so that you can explain yourself fully, then call them so you can answer any further questions that they may have.

Should I quit my hated dead end job to be a substitute teacher?

We Answered:

I think teaching is a calling, not a job. If you feel that you should join the teaching force strongly, I suggest that you give your current boss a few days notice before you do your resignation letter. And, when you venture into teaching, it's a very dynamic job - you've got to handle different situations everyday and you need to learn how to REACT and ADAPT fast to the demands of teaching, even if that means you are just a substitute teacher. If your performance is satisfactory enough, the principal might just grant you a full-time job (plus some other additional teaching courses, depending on the country you live in)

And if the salary doesn't quite make the cut, you shouldn't complain, because you are doing this for the passion, and not the money, aren't you?

All the best to you. Do make your choice wisely.

Disabled Teen Employment?

We Answered:

Sorry, but with what you describe as your way of coping with your life - it sounds like you do belong in a hospital - at least temporarily. Are you getting follow-up treatment and are you following it? Are you getting SSI as a developmentally disabled person? Are there any transitional living facilities where you could learn how to live independently? If not, a group home might be a good solution. My daughter/niece is in one now because she could not function at home and hopefully will be back in 90 days after she has been stabilized.

I suggest as a first step you find out if you are receiving SSI and if not apply for it - http://www.cdss.ca.gov/agedblinddisabled…
2nd step - go to the local Social Services office and see what help you can get

Find a residential facility: https://secure.dss.cahwnet.gov/ccld/secu…

Broader UNEMPLOYMENT rate hits 17%. What are you doing to survive if you don't have a job? Share your story!?

We Answered:

I actually spent months finding employment for my employees when I realized that we would have a liberal majority running this country and closed my business down the end of January. I refuse to work 60+ hour weeks simply to enhance Socialism and to help the liberals fulfill their agenda of turning this country into a third world sewage plant.

Like a few others, I'm prepared for the worst case scenario.. Live out in the country, can provide for myself, and am stockpiled to the hilt!

How will granting amnesty to over 20 million plus illegals resolve California job losses as they grow?

We Answered:

It won't help. If it happens, that should be the start of the civil war.
