As someone who employs a babysitter, can I deduct the cost, or would I also have to pay employment taxes?

We Answered:

You can't deduct the cost. If you qualify, you can take a child care credit for part of the expenses.

If you employ a babysitter in your home and not through an agency, you are responsible for employer taxes. If you hire the person through an agency, they are an employee of the agency, not your employee, so the agency pays the employer taxes - it's included in the fee you pay them.

How do I become a nanny for a celebrity?

We Answered:

Celebrities and other wealthy people tend to have very high standards for their nannies. As a nanny, you really need to "work your way up", and should have experience nannying for other families, and probably training in child development, or even a degree in child development before an agency would recommend you for one of these "in demand" nanny positions.

Although working for the "rich and famous" may sound exciting, that's not always the case. Just because a family is wealthy, does not mean that you will be paid better then working for a less affluent family. I've also found that more"important" families can be more demanding and picky concerning the requirements their nannies must meet, and sometimes treat the nanny as "the help", rather then a trusted, and respected care-giver. I have been very happy nannying for regular working families who treat me with respect.
