She may also want to reconsider working at all. If your son can afford Rancho Santa Margarita on his own, he's obviously doing pretty well. With gas prices over $4.50, she very well might spend $300 a month on gas for her car alone.

Ultimately, she should seek out jobs. If she's just looking for a job to be working, there are plenty of places that'll hire her.

Also, tell her not to use the phrase "out here," (i.e. I just moved out here) and that she shouldn't also mention she's from NY unless asked about it. That drives Los Angelinos nuts.

I realize that you are asking how you will be taxed because you don't know, but we can't answer because we have no idea what kind of work you do. Is in insurance? Is it selling cars? What?

You could be an independent contractor and could deduct LEGITIMATE business expenses (commuting and food are personal expenses) by filing a subject C. (Incorporating just makes your tax situation more expensive to process, but it doesn't save you any money since it's still from work and you still owe FICA/MC or SE tax no matter how you file.)
