Personally i find that temp agencies are a waste of time and extremely picky- I was out of a job for 7 months due to time wasting agencies and i swear blind i will not touch another agency- lucky i found a job without having to approach any agencies and i feel that would be your best bet

Temp agencies are notorious for this action in my neck of the woods. A better bet is to look at the employers near you and see if you can get placement with them. SOME employers will require you to go through a temp agency - and those are the ones that tend to not behave in the manner you have experienced.

Whenever possible, apply to the company and skip this middleman step. Look at indeed.com - it's site that pulls from most job boards which makes your searching easier. Hopefully you can find something that suites you.

We Answered:

I gave up on recruiting agencies but some people swear by them. I just try to filter them out when looking for a job. Since graduation I found one job through posting my resume on monster, one through word of mouth, two interviews from craigslist. (I too moved to a larger city after graduating)

I think they often already have a candidate to submit or have filled the job but like to keep collecting candidates.

if you are at a job that is temp to hire, your agency is still responsible for keeping that position filled. if you quit, they have to go through the process again of finding and testing the right person(s) for the job. it's just not as simple as "getting you a job and they are done"
Someone had to scout out the company and gain them as a client.
Someone has to set up individual and blanket training programs.
There is a lot of behind the scenes work that has to be done to even get 1 person to a jobsite, and with that comes the understanding that depending on which way the wind blows depends on if that 1 person is going to stay for the duration, or walk out after an hour.
