I've seen some people stay 2 years at a temp agency. If I were you, I would be applying at other permanent jobs rather then to play the waiting game at a temp agency. They will string you along until they no longer need you.Patricia Said:

A temp agency would probably be able to get you the hours you want. However, if you remain a "temp," they collect a larger fee than you make for every hour you work. So for example, if you make $10/hr, they actually charge the company you are working for $17/hr. Because of this, it is almost impossible to make more than $10-11/hr working as a temp. They just don't have a pay scale high enough to fit with what you are asking for.They may be able, however, to assist you in finding another job. However, it's pretty unlikely that they will find you a part time job that will pay that much (especially since companies also have to pay a fee if they decide to hire you after the temp agency suggests you).
You are probably better off trying to find a new job on your own. But you will probably need really good luck to find a part time job that pays that well, even if you are experienced.

I don't think you want to 'word' past it. It would depend on whether your temp assignments were one day stints or if they were long term. I did temping for a few years and found it to be quite rewarding. It is also an excellent way to test out the kinds of environments you are most comfortable in. If you did one day stints then I would mention the temp agency and perhaps list the many different kinds of tasks you did. If you were at a particular company for a while then I would mention that you temped at such and such a company for x number of months and explain the types of work you did for them. I temped at a major corporation for over 2 years and in 4 different departments there. I learned a lot and it helped me get other jobs once I stopped temping. Good Luck!Duane Said:

if you are talking about office type work -most temp jobs are full day work -
assignments could be anywhere from one day to 10 months -
very little flexibility - you're talking basically 8-5 - give or take - Mon-Friday
depends on the assignment - could start next day or next week
I have gotten my last 4 perm jobs as an accountant starting as a temp - going back 16 yrs

I don't see anything wrong with it. If you have left the company in good terms and you have maintained contact with a lot of your former coworkers. I don't think it is necessary to tell the temp agency about it though because, in my opinion, once you are let go from the company/you left the company (provided that it is in good terms like you had mentioned), the temp agency has nothing to do with the situation. I just don't think it is necessary to tell the temp agency anything because the deal made between the temp agency and the company is over since you no longer work there. If you are looking to do contracting work, then that is an agreement between you and the company. The temp agency is no longer involved. Hope I could help you, and good luck!Helen Said:

A temp agency is like a company that hires you. Basically the temp agency has assignments (job locations) that you work for...for a period of time. It could be three months, six months..or even longer. You work at that job location each day...and you get a paycheck every week from the temp agency and not your work place location.The only problem is you are not a permanent employee at the job location. Your just a temp. So that means when the job assignment is done then the job location lets you go and the temp agency has to find you another job at another location. So you move from one job to another after one is done. Sometimes you might complete one job and then when your job is done the temp agency has nothing for you until they get another request from another job site. So during this time you are unemployed until the temp agency finds another job for you.
So in general temp agency is good if you like to move around from job to job. You have to be flexible though. However since you are not a permanent employee at the job site, you do not get full medical benefits like a regular employee has. Temp agency does have medical insurance (limited) coverage for you but you have to work for a certain number of total hours for the month before you get any medical coverage. You do not get any holiday pay until you reach a total of 1,000 hours of work time which is well over a year with the temp agency.
There are job sites that are called temp to hire. That means you work at the job site location for a period of time and if you stand out in the company, then the job site company will hire you permanently as their employee. However from what I noticed it is very slim. Very few people that I know who works at a temp agency get hired permanently as a employee at the job site.
So during your first visit to the temp agency, they want you to dress professionally and bring your social security, driver license and a resume. You will talk to the temp agency recruiter or staff person. They will look over your resume and talk about the line of work you had in the past and your skills. They will give you a safety test and also maybe a office test for computer literacy. Then they will tell you the assignments or job sites/companies that need a temp person and how long the assignment (working at the job site) will be. The staff person will send your resume to these job places (assignements) and if you fit their profile you will get a call from the temp agency.
So think of it like the temp agency as the middle person. The job or job site is what the temp agency will be talking to about what kind of job and how long. If it fits your skills, the temp agency will contact you. The temp agency coordinates what the job site (assignment) needs and if it fits your profile.
So as far as determining how much you get pay depends on the workplace. Temp agencies never tell you this. So the temp agency negotiates with the job assignment how much the job site pays the temp agency for you to work. The job site always pays the temp agency higher than what you would get per hour for pay. So lets say they pay $19.00 to the temp agency per hour for you to work but then you might get only 12.00 per hour depending on what the temp agency tell you how much you would get paid at that job site (assignment). That is how temp agencies work and get their money. They know they get more and you would get less then what they make. Each assignment has a different pay scale. So one assignment you could get 14.00 and the next assignement you could get 12.00 per hour. But the temp agency knows they always make a profit since they get more from the job (assignment). The temp agency never tells you this.
