Career In Health Information Management

Harry Said:

Would you pursue PhD in Plant Biotechnology or a Masters Degree in Health Information Management?

We Answered:

i would go for the health information management. it is a growing field and there is a lot of job security. but ask yourself what you are passionate about and what you will be happy doing.

Laurie Said:

Is Health Information Management a good field?

We Answered:

I can only answer from one who has been in the health care provider side. The electronic medical record is a wonderful tool, but it is going to take years to work out "bugs" and to modify the generic template into a useable tool in each organization. Further, there will always be regulatory changes that require significant modifications down the road. From my perspective an HIM person who is knowledgeable in coding, the law and EHR work flow is a "gift". In short, there should be plenty of work to do and a high degree of job satisfaction.

Good luck!

Agnes Said:

What can you do with Master of Library/Information Science?

We Answered:

There's more options than just librarian and with a computers and health background you'd be in a pretty decent position to get a job.
There's "knowledge manager" positions, technical services (very computer science heavy), database specialists, straight website design, corporate info officer, competitive intelligence, any place that makes or sells things to libraries (database vendors, publishing companies, anything from sales to design), indexing and that's what's off the top of my head. Most of the MLIS programs I looked at had some sort of "alternate" careers section on their website.

There's also a book "What's the Alternative? Career Options for Librarians and Info Pros" by Rachel Gordon. Don't buy it, see if you can borrow it somewhere and it will give you a few ideas.
