Career In Medicine

Peter Said:

Why do people in the internal medicine career get paid less than other doctors?

We Answered:

I wasn't aware that they were paid less. But you can't make a blanket statement about how much a doctor of anything makes. Some work for clinics or medical groups, and they negotiate a salary when they join the group. Others may be in private practice and own their own clinic, and they can often make much more. But more to the point, if you are looking at coming into medicine for the money, then I suggest you are coming in for the wrong reasons. While a comfortable living wage is always important, getting rich is certainly not the reason anyone comes into any of the medical-related careers. For the most part, everyone is doing it because they enjoy the work, and are rewarded in other ways. It is always nice to realize that there are people alive and walking the streets today that would NOT be alive and walking at all had it not been for your presence when they needed you. That is, in my humble opinion, MUCH more rewarding than a mere paycheck. I know quite a few doctors who would be doctors even if it didn't pay a cent. They enjoy their work. If you don't feel that way, then become an Investment Banker, or perhaps a Derivatives Trader, where you can make some SERIOUS money. You won't find it in medicine.

Catherine Said:

Is it really hard to get into medicine career? How hard? Would I be able to success?

We Answered:

You will need A's all the way through. Medecine is at least 5 years, and that's assuming you don't specialize in any particular field. It's an extremely difficult degree.

Competitive? Maybe now, but perhaps not in 7 years time when you graduate from University. There is always need for more Doctors, so don't worry about finding a job.

split personalities.you have to be tough both mentally and physically.you have to be very caring.you have to love people, you have to get used to people dying on you.you have to tell the next of kin.you have to be devoted and loyal to your patients.I'm not trying to put you off,I'm sure you will make a fine doctor, let your heart lead the way,and think about it.

I want to be a model/actress but my parents wants me to do a career in medicine, what should I do?

We Answered:

Hey Jojo!

Everyone here has suggested some very nice things. However, if you don't mind, I'd like to chime in as well.

First, ask your parents why they want you to have a career in medicine; seriously, is this for them?

How do you feel about a career in medicine? Have you gotten any "taste" so to speak; any hands on experience? This much I do know for certain: The average American stays on a particular career or job for 4 years. This certainly indicates boredom, lack of challenge, being unhappy with what one is doing, or any one of the garden variety, "I think I'll try this for a while."

I agree with Nik regarding age and modeling; however, a lot of this choice depends on what type of modeling you want to do! If you're a catwalk/runway person literally showing what extraordinary designers are doing…well then, if you have the size (waif-like, 5'10" perfect measurements, and face/body versatility) then that's a type of modeling and 24/25 is too far advanced in life to start.

On the other hand, one of my best friends is a "parts model" and she easily cleared a million plus last year! These models do everything from hands, to jewelry, lingerie, feet, you name it and as long as your "parts" are in order…then age really doesn't matter. Another is beauty; you know, the cosmetics kids—Josie Maran, Jamie King, Natalie Imbrulia, basically anyone with a name or is ready to work long hours and make a name. "Fit modeling" is an area where a person, given their size, could work constantly.

Further, this is your decision like everyone has stated. What is it about modeling that you like? The love of fashion and design coupled with the understanding that models act in every editorial or campaign they're in. Ask yourself what is it that attracts you too modeling.

Unlike most professions, medicine is just about a lifetime commitment. Starting with an undergrad degree (Chemistry, biology, science orientated) that's about 4 years. The toughest thing about medical school is getting in and this is no easy feat. Once in medical school the hardest thing is getting out. Most institutions don't like people leaving the school, so your in for an additional 4 years.

Don't forget about your residency which depending on your practice or specialty could be an additional 3 years. If you've read this so far, first you deserve a medal! Sorry for the length, but this is your life! So what did we come up with time wise…oh 11 years. In the totality of life, 11 years is nothing!

One final thought: As the others have stated, "…this is your life." As such you get to do anything you want with it. Try and be truthful and honest with yourself—what is right for one person may not be right for another person. Have fun, be responsible, and get after it, baby!

Cody Said:

Bioengineering or Biomolecular Engineering would be the best major for a pre-medicine career?

We Answered:

Either one is fine. Its what you do that counts. I can take physics to be a physicist, but if I dont do anything, im not going to be successful. Take whatever you want. As long as you study hard and learn, it will matter not which one you take.

Sean Said:

Should I go into a career of physics or medicine?

We Answered:

If you are good at math then I think that physics will suit your best but you should wait and see if you can find any more talents of yours. ^.^
