Are there any entry level careers in Health related to Epidemiology?

We Answered:

what do you mean by entry level? you probably need an MPH to really do anything with epi. if you know SAS you might be able to do some database management without an MPH, but having an MPH will definitely help you out

What health careers are best for someone with bipolar?

We Answered:

There is no "best career" for this. It completely depends on the person. Generally speaking you want something with as low of stress and change as possible, but if your sister manages her bipolar well, even that might not matter. In fact, that is the real issue here: how is she managing her bipolar? Many people with bipolar disease go on to have great and successful careers, pretty much in ALL fields. The difference between them and your sister could be the severity of the bipolar, but most likely it is just the way they managed theirs.

For example, my wife is bipolar, and her problems have had little impact on her career. She did decide against getting her Masters due to the stress level, but she has been a successful university administrator for 10 years. How? By being very diligent about communicating with her doctor, therapist, and taking her medication as directed. When she starts to feel out-of-sorts, she immediately discusses it with her doctor. When she is depressed, she immediately discusses it with her therapist. Her family, me included, help her monitor her condition by looking for signs of mania and depression ourselves. If she seems to be swinging one way or the other, we make sure she visits her doctor. By being diligent in communicating, we are able to make adjustments to her medication when necessary, and she rarely has any serious problems with mania or depression for more than a week or so.

So I recommend that your sister learn how to better manage her disease. Even being bipolar does not give you the right to mistreat co-workers and not get along with people. It does not give her the right to miss too much work or do poorly at work, either. Yes, bipolar CAN impact these things, but when properly managed, most people with bipolar disease can learn to get along in most any situation. The less stress in their lives, the better, but in the end your sister needs to learn to keep whatever job she DOES have. THEN she can start thinking of a new career. What career should it be? Whatever she wants to do!

I realize this is an "easier said than done" situation, but bipolar people do it all the time. I wish her and you the best of luck!
