I am an Occupational Therapist working in a psychiatric hospital, I love it because I get to do cognative work with people, so we do alot of talking and working through problems, but I also get to do loads of practical things such as art and dance and drama. :)

I see many students entering the field working with mental retarded people. Basically babysitting them, driving them around to places, and give them a good quality of life.

Brittany Said:

does anyone out there work in the mental health field? i have a few questions?

We Answered:

You just have to get to college math. You will probably want a degree in Psychology or Sociology. If you do pursue this, you will probably have to continue until you get a Masters degree in counseling at a university.

We Answered:

There are academic programs called Health Psychology which focus on the relationship between health, mind and body. Sports Psychology is another academic program that's similar to this.

Here's a link that explains about the field of Health Psychology

career in mental health field?

We Answered:

That's quite a delema, especially since "becoming depressed if something happens [to patients or consultants]" and "health care" are oxymoronic. You've already suggested the obvious career choices but honestly a councillor, psychiatrist and psychology have very close patient-doctor relationships which would hurt you if anything were to happen to such person. My advice would be to go with Psychology. The pro's for this field would be that you get to help people on a VERY personal level. You will be in many situations where you will know things about patients that nobody else knows but you two. The only downside to this career is that you may not be able to handle the emotional stress of losing a patient, which is very probable. But you cannot forget that sometimes you must risk yourself to change, save and put back together somebody elses life.
