Careers in Public Health?We Answered:
One of the activities I listed when applying to MPH programs was the volunteer work I had done online for a website that focused on adolescent health topics (much like what I do here at Y!A). It counts.Since you'll be taking a gap year or two before grad school, you might as well work in a field relevant to your public health interests. A few of my friends worked in health insurance, others in HIV/AIDS advocacy. One of my classmates operated a homeless shelter for youth. Some did cancer and biology research or worked for biotech firms.
There are a lot of good programs that don't ask a lot. Okay, if you wanna do Hopkins, Yale, Harvard or Berkeley, you have to bring a lot to the table. But I got into good MPH programs at George Washington and USC, and I am not exceptional by any stretch. Now I'm doing infectious disease epidemiology, and I like it!
