Coast Health Career College

Dan Said:

National Search and Rescue School? Coast Guard/Air Force?

We Answered:

Associates degrees themselves don't get you advanced enlistment, but the college credit you earned does.
In semester hours:
Air Force: E-2 is 20, E-3 is 45
Coast Guard: E-2 is 30
Navy: E-2 is 24, E-3 is 48
Army: E-2 is 24, E-3 is 48, E-4 for 4-year degree
Marine: E-2 is 12

With a bachelors degree, you can commission as an officer into any service. If you're looking to be a health care officer, you the standard degree in the area you'd like to work.

Both enlisted personnel and officers can serve in SAR. The CG is designated as the only federal agency responsible for maritime SAR (though the Air Guard participates) and the AF is the one responsible for federal-level inland SAR. AF SAR crews are also tasked with medevacing, etc in theater and SPECOPS PJs are responsible for rescuing downed personnel in combat theaters.

So, plenty to do if you're looking to mix military and health care! There are many ways to get involved, but the first step should really be to talk to recruiters from the CG and AF (and any other services you're interested in learning about). Good luck!

National Guard, Coast Guard, or Air Guard?

We Answered:

the Air National Guard , and the Army National Guard are basically reserve units, meaning your not gonna be full time military.

The Coast Guard is an active duty service. Meaning, you will be doing Coastie things on a daily basis.

The Air Guard and the Army Guard are great if you want to stay in your home town and serve, if you join the Coast Guard, then you will be stationed anywhere there is CG base or cutter.

You pick what you want to do.

If you want to be a National Guard Health Care specialist, be one, if you want to be an Air Guard , be one. You pick. they are all great. You pick what ever job you want that they have available at your nearest guard station.

but Like I said, only look into the CG if you want to be active duty, or look into the CG reserve if you live near water.

Ashworth College or Florida Gulf Coast Univ? Certificate or Career Diploma?

We Answered:

Florida Gulf Coast would be better. Ashworth College is not regionally accredited. I think that you would be able to get a job with either a certificate or a diploma.

becoming an oncologist?

We Answered:

Why don't you try volunteering at a local hospital and see if you can help in the cancer ward.

You want to make certain that you can handle this before you set your sites on this.

My father died of cancer, I have a daughter with cancer so I am really hoping this is the career for you.

Want to start college to be ultrasound tech. Which of these programs would it be under??

We Answered:

When thinking about entering an ultrasound program, you need not be concerned so much about certificate vs. degree. What is important is that you go to an ACCREDITED program, whether it is college or hospital based. An accredited program allows you to take your registry (licensing) exams upon graduation. Once you get licensed, you will never be asked about your schooling again. An employer does not care what route you take to get licensed, they just want you to have that license.

Don't waste your time or money on a NON-accredited program. Upon completion and graduation from a NON-accredited program, you must work in the field of sonography for a full year prior to taking your licensing examinations. But, you will have a hard time finding an employer to hire you, unless you are licensed.

I would suggest you observe an imaging department to get an idea of what ultrasonographers do daily. There is much more to it than scanning pregnant women. Most people have no idea how much is involved in this career!

You can find a list of accredited schools in your area, by searching "diagnostic medical sonography" and your state at the following site. There are links provided for each program, which will give you additional information (including course duration):

http://www.caahep.org/Find_An_Accredited…

There are only two accredited u/s programs in MS...they are in Tupelo and Jackson.

Many people, myself included, go to school to become a radiologic technologist, before continuing to ultrasound school. In fact, it can be difficult to get into u/s school without the RT license. There are many more choices for schools for x-ray in most states. You can find them here, by searching “radiography“ and your state:

http://www.jrcert.org/cert/Search.jsp

The pay for ultrasound technologists will vary, depending on experience and geographical location. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists just did a large salary survey, in 2007. You can see how much a RT and/or ultrasound technologist averaged, per year, in your state here:

Coast Guard ???

We Answered:

Health Services Technician (HS)

Health Services Technicians provide routine and emergency health care services in large Coast Guard clinics or small sick bays, ashore or on cutters. Services could include direct medical care for personnel and families; assisting medical and dental officers; performing diagnostic testing, x-rays and clinical lab tests; prescribing medications; administering immunizations; performing minor surgical procedures and much more.

If assigned to independent duty, you will provide for "your" crew's medical needs. You may be involved in search-and-rescue or medical-evacuation missions.

Training

Begin with 13-weeks of HS A-School at Petaluma, CA. Intensive training in anatomy and physiology, patient examination, evaluation and treatment, and pharmacology. Learn the techniques and hands-on skills required to fulfill your duties. Next, you'll be assigned to a unit with a large clinic to sharpen your skills.

Qualifications

Desire to help people needing medical and dental attention. Meticulous attention to detail. Pleasing personality and ability to work closely with others. Medical or dental experience is helpful. School courses in practical mathematics, hygiene, biology, physiology and chemistry are an advantage.

most people i know enjoy it-more civilan than military...you dont have to worry about caring to soliders whose legs have been blown off-mostly just dental assisst. however, im not sure if there is a wait list for that program you have to score a certain score on your ASVAB to even be considered-or to even get in the CG. talk to a recruiter that way you'll know your odds before you even sign up. you get see if theres a opening for a gaurenteed A school, that way as soon as your done graduation you'll go directly there. the CG will give you free trainning and you can use your MGIB or tuition assistance to persure a degree on your own while your in the CG.
