If you know what is your goal now I recommend you to go for it and not become a medical assistant and later change career even if its in the same field. Don't waste your time and money. Just go for what you really want.

I wanted to become a nurse, but someone told me that becoming a ma first was going to help me. It did not.

Many employers offer tuition reimbursement about $1 for hour worked. In my opinion $40/week are not enough.

Yes. Although universal health care and education has proven to be so much of a benefit to society, they allowed these socialist policies.
Many things have proven to be better run by government than through the private sector.

Free for citizens in public (government) operated clinics, and public schools. For private hospitals & schools everyone pays regardless. Healthcare for non-citizens is paid by the employer as part of health insurance plan for their employees. Emergency vaccinations like swine flu shots etc are free , and the government pays for that.
