Health And Career Education

Glenn Said:

Homework Help. How would you explain Why Safety is important?

We Answered:

In most cases, it is important because of early manufacturing exploitation in the early 1900's. Workers were subject to conditions in which they were looked upon as expendable. Machinery had little or no safeguards. If a worker had an arm severed, he was simply replaced with another worker.

As for health concerns, many factories forced workers to work in environments of excessive smoke, furnaces, coal mines where black lung and cave in's were commonplace. Workers earned little, and couldn't afford a day off when stricken with the flu, or illness. Additionally, there was no medical insurance, no physicals, no testing. Workers were often side by side with co workers infected with any number of contagious diseases.

The reason today safety is considered so important, is in the past people were generally at the mercy of those who exploited them for profit. Another reason is the general public is at risk of incompetence, or unwillingness to invest and spend with the well being of others in mind, without safety regulations. You don't want to be flying in a plane, or driving next to a semi truck, capable of killing you instantly, while leaving any safety regulations of the operators or equipment, to the digression of the companies which operate them.

Jeremy Said:

Have a BS in bio, what career education can I obtain other than an MS or PhD?

We Answered:

There are some colleges that offer a Fast Track nursing program where you can get your RN degree in 12-16 months, provided you have a B.S. already (which you do).

You can actually also consider a program for Pathologists' Assistants, which is usually a 1.5-2 yr program. You can make some nice money (50s) and you work in various path labs. The ASCP certification is something that I believe you can do on your own (you don't need to be in college or anything like that).

I worked in a midnights path lab where we collected placentae and dissected them, It was pretty good and I worked with several pathologists and histo techs.

Good luck!

We Answered:
