In the US, you can be hired in the mental health field with just a high school diploma. At that level, all you do is help supervise kids in psychiatric hospitals, you don't do any counseling but you definitely would be making a difference and the pay is pretty good. You have to have good references and present yourself as a confident, mature person.

Two friends of mine worked this sort of job while going to school for their psychology degrees. It's a great way to learn about the field while earning some money.

Hi there,

I would suggest checking out websites for the big mining companies BHP, Rio Tinto etc & checking out the positions vacant, check what types of skills & experience they are looking for. Maybe someone's desperate for H & S officer regardless of whether they have a mining background.

You may be able to get your foot in the door another way & gain the experience you need while working in another area.

For example, there are a lot of short courses you can do. My sister works as a compliance officer in the mines in Western Australia, she gained experience "on-site" by doing a short course in noise sampling last year and has found it to be highly sought after.

In Queensland you can generally do short courses to get your rear-dump & excavator tickets too.

I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere but in Queensland (especially in Mining regions) most of the TAFE's there have so many short courses for the mines you can hardly study anything else - It's all mining

If you can pass the medical requirements for immigration and can get a permanent visa, then you will be covered immediately by our Medicare system which provides world class public hospital and medical care. Australian medical facilities are up with the best in the world so you needn't worry on that score.

If you wish to also have private health insurance for private hospital care and extras, you will be able to get that even with a pre-existing condition but will have a waiting period of up to a year (depends on the fund) before you can claim private hospital and/or extras benefits for treatment of that specific condition. Unless you are likely to be hospitalised because of your Rheumatoid Arthritis, that shouldn't be a problem and you would still have free access to the public hospital system in the meantime. Private health insurance doesn't cover anything other than hospital care and things like spectacles and physio. All doctors and specialists are covered by Medicare alone so there are no waiting periods for those.

If you come on a temporary visa, you will not be eligible for Medicare and will need private health insurance.
