Duane Said:

Questions for anybody with a career in health?

We Answered:

My parents are both doctors, anesthesiologist and my mom OB - Gyne

For college, they went to pre-med for 4 years. After that, they went to med school for another 4 years. After that, they went to residency for 4 years..
A lot of hard work and stress, but in the end, it was all worth it

my dad's likes:
Professional fees are very high,
He finds his job easy because of all the training and studying he did

dislikes:
it can be VERY stressful sometimes, because you can get called anytime of the day if there's an emergency. And sometimes you have to make quick decisions with the surgeon under pressure when the patient's life is in YOUR hands. oh, and the length of the emergency procedure isn't always predictable

my mom's likes:
She only works 3 hours a day and earns a lot from her clinic
Finds it easy

dislikes:
also stressful because when your patient gives birth, you HAVE to be there, but it's not a big deal. she also finds it rewarding

What is your opinion on the pressure girls face today?

We Answered:

You could create a survey where girls would be asked (anonymously) to rank such issues in their order of importance to them. Then analyze and comment on the results. You'd need thirty to fifty answers to get a good feel for the problems.

Or you could zero in on one of these topics, and do a really good job with it.

My own opinions on these issues:

— Eating disorders: The most harmful ones are when a girl wants to lose weight very quickly. She resorts to eating less than a thousand calories a day, or forcing herself to throw up. No matter who tells her she isn't FAT, she doesn't believe them, because the ideal shape in her mind goes back to pre-puberty slenderness, not maturing curves. Your survey could ask, "Have you ever tried anything like this? Do you know anybody who has? Did it turn out badly?"

— Stereotyping: Much of how other people perceive a girl depends on the visual image she projects. How she wears her hair, what clothes she chooses, her weight, and her posture all make a statement. Beyond that, kids like to put other kids into categories such as "brain", "jock", "nerd", "bad boy", "stuck up", "sex bomb", or "dummy". Your survey could ask for additional ones. Note how many of these terms are insulting.

— Media pressure: Much of what you see on TV or hear in popular music seems to try to sell sex, sex, sex. Even girls who come from stable, conservative families are in danger of buying in to these ideas. Your survey could ask, "What influences you most -- TV, music, or what you read?"

— School social cliques: Sociologists have studied them for a long time. There's always the "top crowd", which requires money, looks, upscale parents, and usually leadership in school or sports. Lots of girls turn themselves inside out trying to get into it. A friend of mine was going for a while with one of the guys on the basketball team. She got to go to some nice parties, but found that her interests (ballet, books) didn't mesh with that crowd's at all. Depending on the size of the school, other groups form, often from the same neighborhood. The most successful are the ones where the girls are very active socializers, and get the others together for fun activities. Many girls are so busy with family things, jobs, or schoolwork that they have only one or two friends. Your survey could ask, "How many cliques can you think of in our school? What are the benefits and drawbacks of being in a clique?"

— Fashion and brand names: Certain stores and certain brands are "in" even when their quality is much worse than average. Some girls would rather die than wear something from Sears or K-Mart. This issue is much less important than it seems, though. If she has just a few garments with the "right" brand names, a girl can get away with wearing more ordinary things with them. Your survey could ask girls to name three top brand names, and three brands they wouldn't wear to a garbage dump (and why).

What are the best six figure jobs today?

We Answered:

Health care is excellent, if you can stand the hours and are into science, especially biology. You must not be easily upset by bodily functions, injuries, blood, etc. Another consideration for a career in health care are the educational demands. You need to do a lot of expensive degree work to make 6 figures in health care (thank goodness!).

Business is another good option. You need soft skills like communication, problem solving, innovative ideas, leadership, and some competitive spirit. You won't start at 6 figures like you would with health care or law, but you don't need as much education to get started, either. A good 4-year business degree would get you at least $60k in today's market, if you study hard and get good grades. Some graduates start closer to $80k. Then, after you gain some experience, you can work on a masters degree, such as an MBA. Continue to excel at work, and watch your salary climb, well into the 150s, and if you reach the executive level, $200k and beyond.

Art and design also offer 6 figure incomes, if you have an excellent, proven eye for design, and know how to lead an artistic team. A potential career would be art direction. Someone gives you a job to create, say, product packaging, and you would be responsible to deliver it. You would have a team of artists, writers, designers, and technical talent to help you. If you don't deliver a good product, your team won't suffer, you will, so expectations are high in this field.

Whatever you choose, making 6 figures will take dedicated educational effort, and lots of hard work. They don't hand out those jobs to just anyone (usually). Do a google search and you'll find websites that are specifically for jobs of $100k and above. Search around and see what jobs are available there.

What are the best careers of today in terms of money making?

We Answered:

Business can mean a lot of things - from public relations to consumer research to advertising to economics to accounting. Accounting is the most stable, but advertising has the potential to be a BIG earner if you're the creative type. Engineering tends to be a big earner, but it requires a lot of smarts in maths and science, and generally a fair bit of travel too throughout your career. Do what YOU want and what makes YOU happy - you have to live your life, not your parents.
