There actually aren't supposed to be too many jobs for the medical assistant (or medical biller or coder) despite what those private $$ schools proclaim. A lot of billing companies are being outsourced to Asia/India as that happened to my cousin who was laid off from her medical billing job that she'd had for five years.

For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'medical records and health information technicians' (just as example) or whatever other career that piques one's interest.

Please steer clear of those private $$ schools (and online, for-profit schools) and instead opt for the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college.

You have to ask yourself what your strengths are and how far are you willing to go to get the career you want. There are a lot of field choices out there, but you have to totally commit yourself to what you choose. How much do you want to spend on education for your field, how long will it take you to complete your education and training, are there any reputable programs available where you live? Take this seriously. Don't just pick a field because it pays the most, or there is a job opening for you. How are you with people? Do you want a lot of patient contact? If you would like to have minimal contact, consider a career in the x-ray or laboratory. There are tons of choices. Talk to people who actually do the jobs you are interested in, shadow them for a day -make the right choice for you. We need good qualified health care workers.
