Health Information Management Careers

Gloria Said:

which career field is more rewarding and strong human recoures management or health information management?

We Answered:

Without a doubt, I believe health information management is more rewarding and strong. Many trends are driving the growth and demand for health information management professionals including the adoption of electronic medical records, aging population, and importance of patient privacy.

Katie Said:

Health information technology and Health information management ?

We Answered:

You are correct.

Health Information Technology pretty much encompasses everything that deals with the individual job duties that the HIT/HIM department must deal with.

Health Information Management is a higher level of managing Health Information Technology.

With an AA you can obtain the credential - Registered Health Information Technician.

With a BS you can obtain the credential - Registered Health Information Administrator

You can easily transition from AA to BS depending on the college you go to. Just make sure that they are accredited by AHIMA. For more information go to www.ahima.org

Janet Said:

Anyone with a degree in Health Information Management?

We Answered:

I have a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management.

I am also a Registered Health Information Administrator.

I'm very glad I chose the degree because there are many options you can go to with a degree in health information management. Currently I am clinical documentation management specialist where I pretty much improve clinical documentation to improve reimbursement. I've worked in different areas including hospitals and detention centers/jails. With some more experience and emerging technology, I would like to do some consulting work and hopefully work from home.

You have three options:
HIM - management of information/records - most traditional route
HIM - reimbursement/insurance/coding - most lucrative as an employee and employer
HIM - technology - emerging trend in the healthcare industry.

That's from my perspective, but if you want to know what many options you have you can go to www.ahima.org

What is the future benefit of a minor in Health Information Management?

We Answered:

I work in the Health Information Management field. It would be beneficial to add as a minor because right now we are working with many different clients (doctors offices) who are switching from the old paper charts to electronic medical records. In the future many more hospitals and offices will be implementing the same types of systems that we offer. It is definitely the wave of the future. We also offer billing services to doctors. We help them manage their insurance claims, collections, etc. so they can focus on the actual practice of medicine. This is a really common thing within smaller practices (1-10 doctors) that can't afford to employ every type of employee that they need. If you are versed in information management you can offer solutions to your place of employment to cut overhead costs by outsourcing some of the more menial aspects of running a hospital or office.

Amy Said:

Health information Management? Please help?

We Answered:

Health Information Managers can work in medical records assisting clinical staff and insurance companies in retrieving data about patient care. Most of the career options are limited to big hospital systems and private offices, but with transition from paper charts to electronic medical records there should lots of opportunities to find jobs.
