Health Insurance Careers

Jessie Said:

How do I start career selling Health insurance?

We Answered:

It's very, very, simple if you don't mind a little studying. Of all the investment related licenses, insurance is the easiest, and of those...health is the easiest. Start with the group 1 insurance exam. you can google it and get a bunch of results for study materials, or email me and I'll give you more details. The Group 1 encompasses health and life in the same exam and it is a fairly easy one. Then just find a firm. Again, I can point you in the right direction there too. What state are you in?

How good is a life/health insurance agent career, would it be a good choice?

We Answered:

It's true. You can make a ton in this industry. Of course everyone is going to tell you they make great money--who ever says "My income is down the crapper with this business!" The reason most people wash out of this business is the same reason mortgage salespeople wash out--bad prospecting and no one to see. If you were successful in another sort of financial sales, selling complex intangible products to people, you'll do fine in the insurance business. I think you'll find a little more trust from your clients off the bat. After being in the mortgage industry for a year I went into insurance, where I've been for 4 years, and I felt a little more prestigious. Maybe it was all in my mind. Oh, by the way, find one or two lines you enjoy and make it your niche. I focus on health insurance and also annuities. I do cross sell life, disability and long-term care, but if you do too much you'll spread yourself too thin. Products and regulations change so fast is hard to become an expert on all of those products, especially for me as I represent 6 carriers. I would definitely start at a place like Northwestern Mutual, MetLife, New York Life, or New England Financial before going independent. They have great training and support programs for you as you learn the business. Plus you'll have the advantage of learning from top producers doing joint appointments. Good luck to you.

My husband is switching careers...we need short term health insurance for the in between period?

We Answered:

Short term health policies do not cover any pre-existing conditions. COBRA will be available if your current plan has more than 20 employees. That will be your only option to keep the conditions covered.

Rebecca Said:

does anyone know what type of careers are out there for those with a life and health insurance license?

We Answered:

I just started a work at home business as a health benefits consultant. It's pretty cool, and I find it very exciting to be able to offer people an alternative to high health insurance costs. Check out the website www.myhomebusinesspays.com/40545943 and if you want more info feel free to contact me. It's not a scam at all...you just have to make the time to find the people that need the product. You actually do get paid daily (no joke). It's awesome, and a Godsend for a stay at home mom such as myself.

Is a Health & Life Insurance Agents Career Successful?

We Answered:

It all depends on how good of a salesperson you are and how good you are at taking the word "no." It's really frustrating. More than likely, with this type of position, you will have to drive your car from place to place and get people to sign up for some product that, at first, they are going to be skeptical about. Plus, I should warn you that if you drive you vehicle, some of the companies won't reimburse you for mileage. While some companies do reimburse you for mileage, they won't reimburse you if something happened to your car, like if you blew out your engine going out of your way to make an appointment! If I were you, I wouldn't take the position especially if I had a salary based job that paid me a "guaranteed" wage! Why leave something guaranteed for something that isn't? That would be backwards if you did, but do what you want to do. I just know that I would never take a position like that unless it was salary + commission. That way, whether or not you make a sale, you're still getting paid no matter what.

With jobs like that, you get paid a little for doing a lot. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have it the other way around! If I exhaust myself just to get to your place of business and sell to you, I'm gonna make you buy my product!
