Major/Minor: Sociology & Public Health Policy?

We Answered:

I have my degree in Sociology but I never got a chance to use it in the job market. My husband and I were blessed with a son and I wanted to stay home. There are a variety of jobs available, but many don't pay buckets of cash in the beginning. If you want to help people and don't care about the money as much, sociology will be a very good way to go.

I found this web site with job opportunities from the American Sociological Association.

http://www.asanet.org/cs/root/leftnav/ca…

I copy pasted this from that site

# social services--in rehabilitation, case management, group work with youth or the elderly, recreation, or administration
# community work--in fund-raising for social service organizations, nonprofits, child-care or community development agencies, or environmental groups
# corrections--in probation, parole, or other criminal justice work
# business--in advertising, marketing and consumer research, insurance, real estate, personnel work, training, or sales
# college settings--in admissions, alumni relations, or placement offices
# health services--in family planning, substance abuse, rehabilitation counseling, health planning, hospital admissions, and insurance companies
# publishing, journalism, and public relations--in writing, research, and editing
# government services--in federal, state, and local government jobs in such areas as transportation, housing, agriculture, and labor
# teaching--in elementary and secondary schools, in conjunction with appropriate teacher certification.

hope it helps

Job, MS Degree or JD - Career in Health Care Policy?

We Answered:

I have a Master of Public Policy with a concentration in Health Policy from the University of Chicago, and I have been working at the nation's largest membership organization of physicians for 6+ years. It is a great way to influence health care policy at the national level and it does pay the bills. If he decides to work for a few years, (I would strongly recommend it), locating to DC would be an excellent way to gain experience and knowledge on practical matters related to health care. Once he has a couple years of experience, your son should look at the top policy schools for the best opportunities for on campus recruiting. This is a great time to be in the field. GOOD LUCK!

what are the careers for graduates from master of public health (health management and policy)?

We Answered:

My daughter was going to get this so she could become the CEO of a big city hospital. She changed her mind after interning for several months as an administrator at a big city hospital.

She decided instead to get a masters and doctorate in Occupational Health and Safety so she could take over OSHA.

Health statistics are extremely important, so taking statistics in a degree program like these is critical. Most of the careers in these fields are either in government (local, state or federal) or in nonprofit organizations.
