What health professions have flexible hours? We Answered:
I understand exactly what you're saying and there are MANY options depending upon what you want to do and how much time you want to spend in school.1) EMS (Emergency Medical Services). Paramedics and EMTs do shift-work. They get to see a wide variety of patients, but do not have to take call or take their work home with them. Very interesting field and can require no more than a high school diploma (although paramedic training is about 2 yrs after high school). Plus, it's a rush to drive lights and sirens screaming down the street.
2) Allied health professionals. Radiology techs, sonographers... the people who do testing. Often this is only a short period of study after high school. Generally pays reasonable well.
3) Nursing. This is an excellent field. It pays very well and takes 2-4 years after high school depending upon whether you get your bachelors or associates degree. They get paid very well and the opportunities for nurses are diverse and tremendous.
4) Physician Assistant (PA) - Usually a master's program, PAs work with physicians to asses/treat patients. In most states, they can examine patients, order tests/labs, prescribe medications, and do nearly everything a doctor can, they just need to have a physician available to them. Only in rare specialties do they take call, most of them merely do shift work.
5) Physician. There are some specialties which don't take any call. For instance, Emergency Medicine physicians just work shifts and then go home. You just need to find the right specialty. Granted, it's a long and difficult road to become a physician and will require a large amount of time and commitment, but once you're there, you can find specialties that allow you to have a life.
6) Other kinds of doctors like optometrists, dentists, chiropractors often have little/no call and can offer a very flexible schedule.
Good luck, hope this helped!
