Hi - it will depend on the number of classes you take for one thing. With most schools you have a choice of classes, for example some will encourage you to take medical terminology when you really don't need it. Private medical billing training schools online and on-campus know they make more money when you take more classes. And it will depend on whether you go to a private technical school, medical billing school if you have one, college or university in your community where the semesters are set for a particular time period. Online you can go at your own pace so yu can get through the medical billing training faster. So medical billing courses and training online is faster. Nurse Addison

Well, I went to Western and they promised me job placement and a high paying career.... Now I work in a totally different field, making WAYYYYY less than I deserve because they are pushing out those degrees by the thousands and its incredibly hard to get in somewhere.

Pls research other choices 1st. Many "schools" charge exorbitant fees and rush you thru w/ little real practical knowledge, to take the same classes that could be done at a Community College for $1000's less.

You want a State accredited School for any future job placement so your education is seen as legitimate and not "mail-order" level. They will have any clinical placements for school already set up for you, you won't have to search on your own.

It may take longer but it will be worth it to have the education you need and placement services too.

Check w/ local Hospitals and ask to talk to ppl in that department and ask them where they got their education and it may give you a place to think about.

Do your due diligence before committing as too much is riding on the decision to be quick about it.

If you take a self paced course, you can be done in about 4 months to a year- depending on the amount of time you devote to it. The training course I am most familiar with says it takes about 640 hours to complete. http://careerstep.com/courses/coding-bil… As far as the # of employees it takes to do billing in a hospital, that depends on the size but I would guesstimate 30 or so. Most hospitals have combined the jobs of medical billing and coding into one- medical coding and billing. I would recommend getting training in a medical coding and billing course rather than just medical billing. This way you will be more marketable and more qualified. I don't think there are many just medical billing courses out there anymore.

If still interested in training, perhaps look into the county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course) as they tend to be much more affordable.

Since I'm not sure where you are located, I will have to give a general answer. Medical billing can be taught at community colleges, but you may have to do some searching before you find one. The nearest one to me is an hour drive.

Some of these newer private colleges--like Medix school--also teach medical billing, but you may be required to take the entire medical office assistant course, which could be from 6 mos to a year.
