Ann Said:

What types of colleges would be best for a person training to be a doctor? medical schools?

We Answered:

Just to name a few Harvard, John Hopkins, and Duke are among some of the top medical schools, (the best of the best) very competitive and hard to get into, not impossible, hard.
One important tip: Research the cost of attending these schools. Think about how you are going to fund medical school. I hear a lot of people talking about what grades they need to get into medical school, the best medical schools etc. but not enough people worrying about the financial burden of medical school. The average doctor comes out owing anywhere from $130,000-$250,000 and up.

I work for 20 doctors; they talk about medical schools all the time, and the cost of funding there education. (Just consider all of your options grades, schools, and funding).

Does anyone know any good schools for medical training in EKG/Phlebotomy in the New Jersey area ? ?

We Answered:

The only schools that I would consider are the more ** affordable County Vo-Tech schools or Community College as long as the program is accredited within the industry. Please forgo those private overpriced For-profit tech schools such as everest, star career, anthem, devry, ITT tech, lincoln tech, sanford brown, pima institute and others as they are merely out to "make a profit".

There may not even be too many jobs for Ekg technicians or phlebotomists, and then by going to the more affordable county vocational school or community college, you shouldn't be left with all of that debt while trying to find a job. Please be aware that for some phlebotomy jobs, the employer may prefer an applicant with certification in the field.

To search for accredited programs in lab science (including phlebotomy): http://www.naacls.org/search/programs.as…

For general information about phlebotomy as a career (albeit from the spring of 2000): http://www.bls.gov/opub/ooq/2000/Spring/…

General career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search.

For U.S. colleges (including community colleges): http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

Ian Said:

What percentage of physicians currently practicing in the US received foreign medical training?

We Answered:

In 2003, almost one in four doctors practicing in the United States, or about 180,000 physicians, graduated from medical school in another country.

Yes the US and other (1st world countries) should train their own doctors. However there are a few reasons why this doesn't happen.

The US runs on making money - it's expensive to train in Medicine in the states.

Poor people want to be wealthier and if they can get paid lots of money in a 1st world country and support 20 friends and relatives back home, how can you argue against that.

It's complex isn't it.

I'm an Aussie who went offshore to train and now Oz are trying to prevent me practicing at home. And they say we are desperate for doctors ! Go figure.
