Medical Transcription Jobs

Maureen Said:

With "voice recognition" tech devices emerging so well, will this make medical transcription jobs obsolete?

We Answered:

Speech recognition has been looming for over a decade, without posing a real threat to transcriptionists. The danger in using it in medical transcription is that many words sound alike and could negatively alter a patient's record. Even once perfected, how will speech recognition ever know the difference between an ilium and an ileum?

The theory is that once it is perfected, transcriptionists will move into editorial positions, listening to the dictation while correcting the patient's record.

Does anyone know of any legitimate at home Medical Transcription jobs?

We Answered:

It is difficult at first, so know that you're not alone!

A lot will depend on where you live and what kinds of medical facilities are nearby. If you are looking for your own local doctor to transcribe for, then make up a flyer and start distributing them to medical offices. A lot of them will be grouped around hospitals. (Hint: Take a few expensive chocolates wrapped in cellophane and a bow to leave with your flyer.) But, you also have to know how much you're going to charge and whether you are going to provide a digital recorder or pick up their tapes every day.

If you want to work full time for a national company that has benefits, that will be harder because most of them require experience since there won't be anyone holding your hand as you learn the ropes. You can do a search for medical transcription companies and just start visiting their websites and see whether they will accept people out of school. I'm assuming the school where you got your training doesn't provide help finding employment?

Other sources for jobs are mtjobs.com and mtstars.com (click forums and then look for Job Seekers in the left-hand column). Also, try your local newspaper and craig's list. If your local yellow pages has a transcription service nearby, try giving them a call and see if they're willing to "train" someone fresh out of school.

It's not easy, but it's not impossible. Don't be too picky at first. Your first job may end up being your last, but look at it more as a way to gain that all-important experience. After that, if you're reliable and good at transcribing, then it becomes easy to find your dream job.

Are there really medical transcription jobs out there?

We Answered:

My daughter did the med ins billing and has worked every single day since starting, changed jobs and is making 6 an hour more than her first job, shes been doing it now for about 4 years. I would go to HR at a hospital near you and ask them, what really goes on and is needed in the medical careers of today The schools told my daughter she was totally goign to be trained, they forgot to mention to get more education itd be two more years at a jc, which she almost did thank god she didnt, she did not need to do more schooling to get a great job. Go look at all teh hospital websites in your area, they allhave job boards, look what the prerequisites are for jobs, between that and the HR person, you will know the best target. Medical is always in need, but dont pay to learn to do a bottom job with no advnacment withou more school, do one that gets you somewhere. Daughter was in school (I think) 10 months.

Florence Said:

Is there any Medical Transcription jobs out there that will take someone that is currently in school?

We Answered:

If you are talking about an at-home company, then no. In fact, no at-home company will probably hire you until you get at least 1 year of in-hospital experience.
If you're talking about working in a hospital, then yes, someone would probably hire you even though you are still a student, as long as you are at least halfway done with your education.

What companies does offer real home based medical transcription jobs?

We Answered:

Lots of companies. But how easy it is to get a job with one depends on your experience and quality of training. I used to work for Medquist, and I also understand that Spheris has been known to hire newly trained transcriptionists.
