Mental Health Careers

Irma Said:

What careers are in the mental health or disabled? ?

We Answered:

There are thousands of careers. It depends on what skills you have. There are people who have people skills who work in social work and counseling, there are people who are good with science and become psychiatrists or geneticists, there are people good with numbers who help with financing social services organizations - you can be a lawyer, a teacher, - almost any occupation can help people with disabilities.

What are some careers in mental health?

We Answered:

Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Marriage and Family Therapist, School Psychologist, Neuropsychologist, ect. Look them up online. Even within those professions, there are different things to do. You could, for example, spend your time administering personality questionnaires to at-risk teenagers or lecturing high school kids about getting better grades. Or you could give people therapeutic electric shocks, or become a life coach. Whatever floats your boat.

Jeff Said:

What kind of careers are available to those with an associate's degree in mental health?

We Answered:

The only thing I can think of is maybe a "psych tech." At some risk of oversimplification, these people work in mental health facilities basically doing the same for mental health as nursing aides do in nursing homes. Unless you have a graduate degree in psychology, social work or education, there are few opportunities in the mental health/chemical dependency fields. Furthermore and unfortunately, urban and suburban areas have an oversupply of therapists. This means that good jobs are difficult to find and insurance reimbursements are remaining the same or slowly falling. If this field is your calling, then by all means proceed. If you are just searching, consider other alternatives.

Mental Health Careers?

We Answered:

In order to do exactly what you want you'll need to get your M.S. in the field. You'll be extremely limited if you just get a B.S. and you'll probably have to rely on luck in order to get a pertinent job. Psychiatrists are doctors. You'd have to get your Ph.D. With a master's, you can become a therapist or a psychologist. You can google all of these terms. There are definitions.
