Mental Health Nursing Career

Susan Said:

After graduating as a mental health nurse, what courses can I undertake to further my career as a nurse?

We Answered:

It depends on what career path you want to follow. If you want to be an administrator, perhaps an MBA or a masters in public health might be in order. If you want to teach nursing, a doctorate in nursing or maybe an Ed.D. might be a good idea. If you want to stay as a mental health nurse, perhaps graduate courses in psychology might be good. Organizations such as the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (http://www.apna.org/news/calendar.html) offer continuing education opportunities. Good luck.

Alfredo Said:

I've got bipolar disorder, can I be a mental health nurse?

We Answered:

As long as your stable now, it shouldn't be a problem. The only people who can really ask about that are jobs involving security clearances and police jobs.

Did you consider that your employer may consider it to be an asset? You have been where the people you are helping are now, you can connect to them on a different level. :)
