William Said:

What kind of job opportunites are available for Public health workers (any field) in humanitarian agencies?

We Answered:

If you are a US citizen, consider pursuing a commission in the US Public Health Service. You can't even imagine the variety of important work PHS commissioned corps officers do - you might find them doing things like:
- acting health attache to a US ambassador overseas
- promoting the health of Alaskan natives
- social work in underserved areas or during disaster response
- bolstering homeland security for bioterrorism defense
- implementing African HIV infection strategies
- overseeing poultry handling to study avian influenza

USPHS commisioned corps officers staff organizations such as CDC, FDA, NIH, FDA, Indian Health Service, US Coast Guard, Immigration Control, and many many others. They collaborate with other officials and field workers at local, state, federal, and international levels. Another great thing about the USPHS is that you are not limited by your immediate organization - you may transfer to other operating divisions to broaden one's experience in the public health sector.
