Public Health Career

Public Health Nutritionist career?

We Answered:

I really hate saying this because I think education in public health should require real brick and mortar class time as well as hands-on PH experience, but...

There are online programs in public health. They're not the greatest, but a few of them offer specialties in PH nutrition. It helps to be a registered dietician first, unless you want to work exclusively in public health, but even that would limit your ability to work on the nutrition side of the career.

When you are looking at PH programs, make sure the program is accredited by CEPH (the Council on Education for Public Health). Otherwise your degree is worthless.

And do consider a real classroom program. Many of the masters programs are aware that their students are looking for career advancement, so they'll offer course schedules that are more considerate to the working student.

What are some good career options around the area of public health that involve traveling?

We Answered:

If you were a Forensic Anthropologist/ Biological Anthropologist you would travel. A Forensic Anthropologist looks at skelatinized remains to determine age, sex, stature, and ancestry. Many Fors. Anth. are consulted for each job and don't have a permanant job. They also help out in cases of mass disasters all over the world (like 9/11, tsunami's, plane crashes, etc.).

MS in Public health.Career oppurtunities?

We Answered:

No assurance about easy offers, but a MPH certainly would qualify you for clinic or hospital management opportunities. Of course, public health careers are another potential. Give some consideration to volunteering in health care first, or concurrently, it will give you experience and opportunities to interact with people engaged in the field.

Good luck to you as your consider your options.

What career opportunities are there for and RDH in Public Health?

We Answered:

Check with your local and state health offices. My aunt worked with a dentist in New York for 10 years providing service to inmates at a local prison. When he left for private practice- he took her with him at a much higher salary and shorter hours. She still volunteers at the school to offer proper dental care instructions for the students.

Understandably, you might not be looking on the same level, but if there is a need for public health professionals that are experienced in the dental area, they should be able to help you identify and find those positions.

Good Luck.

I don't personally know anyone on the public policy end of things. I try to avoid the politicos. But yes, there is a lot of community advocacy gigs and public policy think tanks out there looking for new talent.
