If you look for a job while you're still working you can seamlessly transfer from your old job to the new one. Simply tell the new boss you will need to give a two week notice to your old job, do so, then go on to the new job. No living under an overpass, no eating rat feces infested food from the McDonald's trash, no wearing cast-off clothing unfit for a dog to sleep on. You're golden. Life is good. Checking account is fat. The Universe smiles upon you.

Is it a union shop? Are you a member of the union? If so, go down to the union hall and register as unemployed then go to unemployment and apply for your benefits. Out of area employment, especially if it doesn't pay enough to cover expenses, does not mean you have refused a job or have quit.

Try talking to your boss and letting him know of your plans. Some are very understanding when it comes to getting your education. Suggest that you make the time up by staying later or coming in earlier and not taking lunch breaks. It has to be a way to resolve the matter. Getting fired will look horrible on your background check and may slow up your unemployment process.
