Severe concerns over job searching?

We Answered:

Are you prepared to do other jobs? This is what that is happening in the USA. There are so many people there with high qualifications that most are willing to start low and look for other jobs.

How about working in the hotel or food industry?

Saturday Job Search help please!!!!?

We Answered:

The internet is great. But why don't you think about places that you or your family go to frequently? Think about those places? Do they hire kids your age? Are they open on Saturdays? And if you're fifteen don't you need to find a job that is within walking/bike riding distance? That's how I got my first job busing tables and washing dishes. Was it a great job? Not the best paying job, but it was a steady every Saturday job and occassionally on Sundays. Moreover, 30 years later I am still good friends with my old boss. He was a friend of my parents as well at the time. A tough guy to work for, but truly cared about putting out a good product and providing for his customers and employees. Think of people that your parents know as well. It's easier to get a job with someone you know than someone you don't. Although they might have expectations based upon your parents as well. Good luck.

I really need a job but am severely disheartened by so many rejection letters and e-mails, what should I do?

We Answered:

Hi there
Sorry to hear about your run of bad luck. You don't say at which stage you're getting rejected though?

If you aren't getting interviews, then it may well be that your CV and/or letters of application that need some attention.

The most common reason for rejecting someone's CV is poor spelling - obe error is enough to have your application rejected, especially if you're going for clerical jobs. (writing GCSE's is the classic error by the way)

Some companies that are inundated with applications won't progress any that don't stick strictly to any published rules - so if it says 'quote ref 1008/HR on the envelope' and you don't then they won't look at your application
(I'm making these point just because I've learned that lots of people don't realise this)

If you're getting interviews then you're clearly doing something right! :)
It's always worth asking for feedback if you don't get through at interview stage. A lot of companies will just fob you off with 'there was nothing wrong with you it's just the successful candidate was better', but others will take some time to tell you something constructive.

I'm not surprised you didn't get shop assistant type jobs - many companies are very wary of giving jobs to people they think are overqualified, which it sounds like you would be. Generally, you'll do better at getting jobs which specify that you should have A levels.

One way of getting work is to sign up at temp agencies for general admin jobs - that will give you the experience that's lacking from your CV at the moment and help you get something better in the future. It also gives you the chance to try working at various different companies and can lead to being offered a permanent position.

Do be aware that the jobs market generally quietens down in the summer and picks up about now, so don't be disheartened aboyt the past few months.
You don't say where you've been looking for jobs, but for the kind of work you're talking about the local paper, and its online counterpart, is usually the best.

While you're waiting for something to come throug you could also do some voluntary work - offering to help out with admin in a charity's head office (there's plenty of those in Birmingham) - again, that would be something that would look good on your CV

Finally, have you considered about getting some vocational qualifications? Or going to University? If you're unemployed you can do quite a good range of Further Education level courses quite cheaply.

Hope something there is useful - good luck

Is it possible to find a job in the UK in field of construction as a Civil Engineer ?!!!?

We Answered:

I feel very sorry for you, and for all new degree holders .
I was in Aston uni, (about a hundred years ago) ! The company I was working for paid my wages while I was working or at uni, to get qualified back in those days meant the sun shone out of of your bum!
But even back in those days qualifications came second place to actual work experience. Certainly that seems more applicable now.
I continued working for the company that had supported me (Hams hall power station) which is no more it is just like a large car boot sales ground, then a midlands tyre group Also no more. Then an oil place in Aldridge Also no more!
But I was very bored in this last place, and before it all closed down I sat in my little office and started reading the situations vacant in the Daily telegraph every thursday , I read an ad about a contract job in Saudi, 3 times my present salary all found! No income tax! I eventually got it.
I would say that in your case you have next to no chance of getting any meaningfull job in the uk, you need practical experience.
Take any menial construction job you can find you will need the experience for your cv.
Even then you will need to look further afield to find a decent paid job.
I was never in my life out of work but even back in those days I had to travel well out of the UK.
Sorry if all this seems dismal but the situation here in the UK is really dismal as it is in most parts of the world.
