Gene Said:

Are Calgarians (Calgary, Alberta) prejudice?

We Answered:

All peoples are prejudice. There are no specific "dangerous areas". Calgarians tend to speak their mind and are very candid. If you are from a minority and you behave like a victim and talk like a victim or act superior to them, then they will blast you to your face! The NE part of the city is the most multicultural and also the poorest. We all generally live there at some point in our lives as Calgarians.
I really don't think we are any more prejudiced than anybody else., but we may seem that way to others. My wife has had several bad encounters with ethnic cab drivers, as have I, but hers were more serious than my own. One refused to giver her change and took 2X cab fare as his (involuntary) tip and then threw her out when she objected and another would not make change on a $10 cab fare out of a $20 Bill. I had one, after the brutal killing of a young couple (honor killing) explain to me how this was the right thing to do and that "the community" was very supportive of the killing since they had been violating that ethnicity's cultural traditions. He's lucky that I didn't vomit in his cab! Sometimes it is very difficult not to be prejudiced when this occurs frequently with a particular ethnicity!

by the way...the killing was in front of the local restaurant where we got take out, when we lived in the NE . It was by the ethnic community on part of the ethnic community! Not by "red neck racists".

Does anyone know any Canadian company willing to support a work permit for foreigner?

We Answered:

Calgary is your best city to go to when looking for jobs. Alberta has the hottest economy right now, so yes Calgary definitely. (Forbes also ranked it the cleanest city in the world!) Air Canada is the best company to look at for hiring foreigners to work. Good luck. You will love it here. Calgary is a beautiful city. :)

What is a GOOD summer job for teens in Calgary??

We Answered:

Like the other poster suggested, baby-sitting or helping out at hotels/restaurants may work. Try your local movie theatre, bike shop, etc - they seem to hire fairly young people, too.

Have you tried going to the local mall and asking at stores there? Or you could get a paper route - I hear that pays rather well, too! If you are really determined to get a job, I'd suggest getting out of the house and hitting the streets - go in to every business or store and ask if they are hiring. Yes, it is hard work, and you'll hear a few "No's", but if you keep at it, you WILL find something!

Good luck,
FF
