Job Search Jobs

Amy Said:

I am wanting to relocate to find a better job, but jobs I search for do not specify pay?

There's a few reasons companies don't typically post salaries in their job ads. Sometimes, it's for fear of disgruntlement, or to hide it from their competitors. The reason you might be interested in though, is that companies have a salary range for a specific position, and the actual salary they offer within that range depends on an interviewer's knowledge and experience. For this reason, they like a full interview before discussing pay.

It's true that you want to avoid pay discussions prior to or during an interview, but in your case, I see it being acceptable to inquire about the pay range they have assigned to the position. I'd word it clearly so they cannot assume you are trying to pin them down to a specific dollar amount. If they like you enough to interview you, they should let you know what it is.

You'll have to assume you'll start near the bottom of the range (because you won't know where you'll fall), but at least you'll have some idea of whether or not you can afford to live on the salary.

Good luck.
