Living in Malaysia - Visas? We Answered:
Work visas are not difficult to obtain, you just need to know WHO to obtain it on your behalf. My husband and I use a "middleman" (to whom we pay RM3,000). Some people may sqawk at the amount but trust me, it's worth every dollar! We don't have to deal with the Immigration Department (who are not the most competent ... sorry for being blunt). We've been here 12 years and husband's work visa and my dependent's pass are renewable every 2 to 3 years. You can either be an employee or an entreprenuer. If you choose the latter and you don't want to fork out RM250,000 for paid-up capital, then you'll need to go into partnership with a local (preferably a bumiputra, ie Malay).
I wouldn't suggest going on the "Malaysia My 2nd Home" as you won't be able to work (it's more a retirement program). You can go on said program if you can either prove an EXTERNAL income of RM8,000 (personal) or RM10,000 (with dependents) OR you'll have to place RM100,000 (personal) or RM150,000 (with dependents) into a Fixed Deposit with an approved Malaysian-registered bank. You'll need to check with the program for updated amounts. Upon approval of your application, you'll have a 10 year renewable visa (subject of course to government changes).
Don't EVER go "underground" ... you'll probably just give away your $$ without seeing the visa.
Can't give you info on student visa.
Good luck on whichever you decide.
