Job Search Nz

Travis Said:

Is this the best approach [TALK TO YOUR BOSS There's no point in searching for a new job if you haven't?] Why?

We Answered:

No I do not agree with that, it was hard to follow though what you ccpd.
If your unhappy at work, its your job to get a new attitude regarding your job. No one is there to hold your hand and make you happy. If you feel you would like more opportunites at work, depending on what industry your in, you can ask about classes they offer or help fund if the business is larger. If you work at a fast food, your limited to what changes you can make, cashier to cook to asst mgr or mgr right? In larger companies they usually post internal jobs that they do want to hire from within and they have jobs they do not want to hire from within. The best way to approach your boss is to say, is there any training available for me, Id like to see my options, Id like to grow with this company, type of conversation. Or look at the other positions and go take some classes and then apply for interoffice positions that are open.

Craigslist for Australia/ NZ/ UK?

We Answered:

Yeah definitely don't use Craigslist in New Zealand! It is seriously carp! What you will also find is that on the listings for cities which have the same name in the USA/Canada most of the listings will not be for the New Zealand place of the same name! Example: I live in Wellington, NZ. Most of the listings for Craigslist, whenever I look at it, have been for Wellington, FL. Not so good!

The 'biggies' in New Zealand for housing and jobs would be Trademe or Seek. Trademe is a bit like Craigslist, Ebay and Amazon all wrapped into one. If you are looking to buy a house, or to rent one yourself (ie not sharing) go to the 'property' section. If you are looking for flatmates (roommates) then go to the 'flatmates wanted' section.

What has also been happening lately is a lot of people where I live have been advertising in newspapers again when looking for flatmates -the reasoning behind that being is that the people who read and actually look for things in newspapers are actually in a mode of seriously looking for a place to live rather than someone just looking into other peoples houses! Bit odd that. But just about *everyone* i know (not students - late 20s, early 30s) have found their flatmates through print media, not online!

Jobs are advertised on trademe as well. I know in my workplace we don't use Trademe as we haven't been too impressed by the range of applicants. However, now that the trademe jobs section has been around a while this could change. One thing that you may find is that the jobs on Trademe have also been advertised in the local metropolitan newspaper. Most of the big newspapers have a special discounted rate for advertising the job on trademe as well as the newspaper.

My workplaces use Seek for jobs - this is a very good site.

Another one could be www.nzjobs.govt.nz which are jobs in the Government Deparments. You sometimes need to be a NZ citizen for these jobs - depending on what they are.

What is the salary for a PSO or PO in New Zealand (Probation)?

We Answered:

The starting pay rate for probation officers is $41,363 a year, although if you have experience in similar work you may earn up to $44,907.

Pay is reviewed yearly and staff progress through a module-based curriculum to the top pay level, which is $53,180 a year.

There is also a recruitment and retention allowance for probation officers in Auckland and Wellington.

Thinking of moving to Chch NZ for a job that will pay about $78,000. Is that a decent salary? ?

We Answered:

I can tell you that you can live well on 78K in NZ. We are a British family of 4 with only my wife working, earning 44K. We pay close on 400 dollars per week on a mortgage, and can still manage. It is tight for us, but not desperate. On 78K you would be well off with plenty spare for meals out nearly every night. Its a good wage!!! Don't worry about that!!!

Migrate to NZ or Aust with medical background?

We Answered:

For Australian migration, the Critical Skills List (CSL) lists all of the urgently required medical field occupations. You won't find anything to do with traditional medicine or therapist occupations requiring low qualifications on there.
http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-s…

The New Zealand Long Term and Intermediate Skills Shortage lists (LTSSL and ISSL) also only include occupations in the medical field that require high level qualifications.
http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/s…

Under the current rules for Australian migration you are not required to actually work in your nominated occupation once you are in Australia if you come on a permanent visa. If however you have temporary employer sponsorship, then you must stay with the sponsoring employer and work in the specific position for which you were sponsored. Australia already prefers employer sponsored migrants and is moving towards an even heavier emphasis on employer sponsorship from July. Simply having a job offer isn't enough - it must be formal employer sponsorship.

New Zealand puts a very heavy points test emphasis on applicants having a job offer and they are required to work at that job after arrival.

Being over 40 reduces the points you earn on the points test for both countries. For New Zealand, 40-44 gets 20 points whereas 20-29 gets 30 points. For Australia, the points for those age groups are 15 and 30 respectively so for both countries, being aged 40 makes it difficult to accumulate enough points for a successful application.
