1. Bank of Queensland. Low fees if you choose the right account and brilliant service. Free statements over the counter; each branch has its own phone number and you can speak to someone actually in the branch (you have no idea how rare that is); 2nd largest no of ATMs of any bank; short queues; if you lose or damage your card, they have in branch immediate replacement.
2. Shop around. I'm with AAMI and find them very good. My under 25 year old kids also find them to be best. RACQ is also good but compare rates.
3. Telstra has the best coverage but if you have any brains, you'll avoid them like the plague. Dealing with Telstra is like dealing with an unfriendly foreign government - awful company and they're very expensive! 3 is good for cheap rates and so are Virgin and Vodaphone adn their coverage is as good as Telstra's until you really get out into the sticks. Avoid Optus; their coverage is OK but service and rates are not.

Don't forget that you can only work with any given employer for 6 months.

Think seriously about doing your 3 months regional work - we get a lot of people on here who are kicking themselves that they can't get a second WHV and the rules are absolutely inflexible about what you need to do to qualify.

EDIT:
Forgot to say that you should open your bank account as soon as you arrive. If you do it within 6 weeks, all you need is your passport. After that, yo'll need to find 100 points of documentation and a more or less permanent address.
