Job Search San Diego

Vernon Said:

Where to search for an IT job in Southern Cal?

We Answered:

Some good sites include monster.com, careerbuilder.com, and ocregister.com. Be sure to check out city and county government web sites, to get on their email list for job notifications. I get about 3-5 calls/emails per week from posting my resume on these boards, and even more when I update my resume.

Sylvia Said:

Should I move from Chicago to San Diego?

We Answered:

First off, know that San Diego may no longer be quite like you remember when you dreamed about moving there. California as a whole is in deep trouble, with some of the worst unemployment in the country, and many of the lingering consequences of housing bubbles -- some of the worst of which were in San Diego. The city is also increasingly turning into another L.A. -- overbuilt, congested, etc., and losing its innocent charm because of so many outsiders moving in in recent years and not really assimilating. You're also going to find it more expensive than you're used to, and you are likely to find a lot of locals not too pleased with people like you moving in from elsewhere "just because." Chicago in particular has had way too many people show up, frankly, as is apparent when the Cubs come into town.

Yes, it's generally easier to be someplace physically but it's no guarantee. If you're fresh out of college, you're also going to be competing for jobs with all the other grads fresh out who know the town better and have been networking for several years. You're also potentially looking at an apartment not so close to the beach culture you want to enjoy -- those tend to be pretty popular and get grabbed up.

Anyway, you can try, but don't be surprised if you end up doing something like waiting tables. A lot could depend on where you went to college and what your degree was in. Something like technology or accounting and you might have decent odds of finding something you're content with. Something like drama or history and you could find yourself on an extended vacation and that's about it. And for what it's worth, after many years, I've surprisingly known people finally picking up from San Diego and moving places like... Chicago. They're happier there, too.

Arlene Said:

well Im a 17 year old male and im in search of a part-time job, what kind of job should i work on at this age?

We Answered:

When i was your age, i couldnt find any jobs relevent to my age. it was tough for me to look out from place to place for a job. so basically now, u have to get exposed. give yourself some time to gain experience (like you said - you dont have any experience) So, now is the time to gain one. at a lot of times in life, we need to go through things that we dont like first. and at the end of the day, you'll be putting a smile on your face when you think back about how you had done in the past. good luck boy! :)
