It's not always crystal clear how to go about searching for a job, I was in a bit of a rut in recent times when I was job hunting, until I found the site in the box below that provides sensible instruction. I soon got myself going down the right route, and in a short while after a few interviews I scored a really excellent job.

nursing school? check out hospitals or special education places. they pay well and its a lot of fun and very rewarding. im a speech therapy major and i work a few days a week at a place for the mentally disabled and a day school for them and i tell you its so much fun. we go places, play games, and just interact and its very rewarding, brings you down to earth.

It sounds like your qualifications are terrific. ABC couldn't possibly transfer you? There are tons of civil service positions in DC, but those can take months for the clearance process. You'd probably be valuable at the State Dept or one of many agencies there, I'm sure, who deal with Spanish-speaking countries' governments, but the same clearance wait applies.

How about checking with newspapers there? National Geographic is headquartered there, perhaps they might have something you could do. There are probably thousands of places you can try. You'll find something fascinating and rewarding, I'm sure. Never give up, and if something interests you, go bang on their door whether they have a job advertised or not. Sell them on the idea.

I envy you your move; I've lived and worked there and LOVED it. If you move before you're employed, don't waste your time moping, there are so many things to see and do there, make the most of it.

You need the job to get the clearance to begin with. All clearances are based on "need to know". If you don't have a need to know, you don't need the clearance. If you don't have the job that requires the clearance, you don't have the need to know.

If you are being considered for a job, you would be on a probationary status until the background check for your clearance came back positive. The paperwork for the investigation would be filled out at the time of application for the job.

One little side note: Rank or position does not automatically constitute a need to know. The commander of a military base would not automatically have access to classified information because it may not pertain to his function as a commander, no matter his rank. Part of becoming a general is that you must be eligible to receive top secret and special access information. Again, just being a general does not get you access, it just means that, if you have the need to know, you are eligible to have access.
