Phyllis Said:

What's the best way for me to move to Winnipeg from the US?

We Answered:

Randy is right.

Even if you found a job in Winnipeg as a cashier, CIC would not approve a work permit for an unskilled job.

You have three choices.

You can come as a visitor. Visitors from the US can stay up to six months at a time. At the end of six months, take a drive down to Grand Forks and re-enter for another six months. You won't be able to work though, not legally, but some places don't check and pay cash (bars).

You can contact the Canadian Consulate in Houston (713) 821-1443 and apply to reside in Canada as a landed immigrant. It won't be immediate, about two to three years for US citizens. About 10,000 Americans immigrate to Canada every year. You'd take Canadian citizenship but you can keep your US citizenship; Canada doesn't ask you to renounce it. Again, being unskilled does not help.

You can get married and immigrate under the Family Reunification class. You'll have to answer questions about length and commitment of your relationship. But, if it's not deemed a marriage of convenience, they let you in. Spouses are easier than adult children to bring in. Again, you have to be on track to take Canadian citizenship.

Canadian citizenship is a real advantage when traveling. I've been told by people in the places I've visited that we're being treated better because we have Canadian passports. In Dublin, every American had to get their passport stamped; I waved my Canadian passport and got waved through like I was an EU citizen. At the Frankfurt airport, they asked for passports and when they saw the Canadian passports, they said "We don't mean you".

Whatever you do. Do not come to Canada undocumented. Get a US passport before coming here.

Let's just help you out with the first part:

Anchorman: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. This is Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission. Here is the news for Tuesday, January 5, 1933, .. [Pause for a second] Yesterday morning a man was found dead beside the CPR line east of Fort William . The man was wearing a ragged coat with big boots, and carrying two knapsacks that contained some coins and food. The police speculate that the man perched on the top of the boxcar, and then got swayed off the car; he may have been trying to go to Toronto to look for work. Since the stock market crashed on Black Tuesday in 1929, people are becoming poorer, the unemployment rate is increasing steadily, up to 24%, and the national productivity is dropping 35%. The whole country is now in a huge darkness of depression, and there is no dawn of recovery coming yet. In this depression, people are losing their jobs, businesses are shutting down, and the whole Canadian society is going through some changes. To discuss these issues, we have a guest in our studies, Professor Ronald G. Henry from Harvard University. Hello Professor Henry, thank you for joining us today.
