Actually, an employer is allowed to provide whatever reference they want to, as long as what they say is true. However, due to liability reasons, most employers will only provide information concerning salary and dates of employment.

One thing to consider:
You will have to prove that those potential employers didn't hire you because of the reference. Most potential employers do not want to be drawn into a lawsuit.
