Is my CV good enough? Review needed please!?We Answered:
You shouldn't want it to just be good "enough." You can always make it better. You want to maximize the number of interviews you get, to maximize the number of offers you get, so you can choose the best position for you.Need to make it stand out more and be a little more transparent. I like that you included sample links to some of your work, but you need to "bare all" instead of just taking your shirt off there. Instead of saying "references available" go ahead and put them on there. (I would actually go so far as to ask your references to write letters of recommendation for you, ask them to let you hold on to the originals, and then send out copies of the letters with every CV you send. Really makes you stand out.)
I like your humorous <Titles /> of each section, but remember, the name of the game here is "Stand out of the Crowd." This basically means that you need to keep amping it up. Perhaps add a colorful (but small and tasteful; don't make it look like a circus) divider between each section. Make sure you print it on thick, high-quality resume paper and send it in a manila envelope rather than folding it. Shows that you pay attention to details and really care about how you present yourself. Even if you're sending it in online, send in paper copies as well of everything anyway, unless the company has specifically asked that correspondence be electronic only.
Especially with your computer-related skills that you're trying to market, I would strongly recommend that you create an interactive CV website. Include all the same info as is on your CV, plus some "extras"--perhaps a short bio of who you are and why you chose and love your field work, etc. I am a teacher and am mostly convinced that at least half of the job offers I got a couple years ago when I was looking came from my simplistic website which had a bio, lesson plans, career goals, research interests, recordings, etc on it. With you going for a software type job, you really have no excuse to not be amping your self-marketing with some electronic measures. If you're really feeling hardcore (I'm not sure exactly what you do as a "software engineer," mind), go ahead and make some kind of a program/layout with a video of you explaining why you want this type of career, and other such interactive CV-type things, burn it to a CD and send it out with your CV. Any hiring boss would think, "Wow, this guy was able to whip up this snazzy way to sell himself?! How great would this guy be for our company's interests!"
Also, make sure that any time you send your CV out electronically that the file name or link name is just YOUR name. The link you sent is here was obviously perfectly okay for this venue, but few hiring manager will be able to take seriously a link with "eternalyou" in the name. Just call it VinayNaiduCV or something.
Keep on tweaking! The process of making yourself an outstanding candidate is really all about standing out. The more you can do to showcase how hard you're willing to work to GET the job and how creative and organized you are goes a long way toward showing your potential new boss what you would be like on the job. Good luck!
