Is my Bachelors Degree Worth Anything These Days?We Answered:
I'm from the same area. Did you go to RIT? I know a few people that are having similar problems that went there. It's a mark of the poor economy that college grads are having as much trouble as they are finding jobs.Try contacting your career counseling center on campus and see if they can assist you in some way. I got some great tips on resume-writing and interviewing when I did this. Your degree is far from worthless - but learning the right ways to market it on a resume and in interviews can help you to get the most out of it. The jobs that want field experience are usually a stretch - when they say 'experience required or preferred' they usually mean it because it saves them significant time and money training you. Have you thought about applying for internships?
I graduated in May with a BA in psychology and I'm a bank teller now - I love my job, but it certainly isn't what I expected to be doing right now. Keep an open mind, because in many cases employers are less concerned with the type of degree you hold as they are with you having a degree at all. Try careerbuilder.com or rochesterhelpwanted.com - those can be vastly helpful. If I were you, I'd take a lesser-paying job just to keep some money coming in and keep looking in the meantime. Gaining work experience never hurts, either, even if it's not directly related to your field of choice.
One way or another, be patient with yourself. Finding a job is exhausting and time-consuming, and often thankless. Be optimistic :) Good luck!
