What should I use to search for civilian teaching jobs on an Naval Base?

We Answered:

In the US there is no DoD schools so any employment would be done through the county for that school district. You will have to go through them to find employment. It might be easier to start as a substitute and then go from there in some areas, and in others you can get hired right away. Only if you are outside the US will there be DoD schools on Navy bases to seek employment at.

What's the best way to find/get a non-teaching job in Japan?

We Answered:

As far as I know, this is the best site for searching a job in Japan.
http://www.gaijinpot.com/

It is rather easy to work as an English teacher but other than that, it takes time. Same as in any country, there are not so many opportunities for gaijin to get a job even if you have very special qualifications. After submitting an application, normally you will have to wait quite a long period, so be patient and it might be better to work in your country while waiting.

Good luck!

Need help looking for teaching job in San Mateo county?

We Answered:

First, good luck with that! My friend has lived there for years and had to sub and work several other jobs in the schools before getting hired (and she is fully credentialled!). You have to go to their district office and see when they are hiring, what paperwork you need, and get your application in. As for searching jobs, Google the San Mateo school district, and you will find what you're looking for. There are also many teaching job sites, like teachers-teachers.com.

What would be a unique addition to a teaching job portfolio?

We Answered:

A good teaching portfolio should have lots of stuff you can "talk about" during an interview. It should be like a show and tell package.

The key to an effective portfolio is to predict what they will ask you and then include lots of relevant stuff in your portfolio. You'll want photos, lots of student work, a philosophy statement, and a few lesson plans.

When they ask you a question about something you've done, you should be able to say, "Let me show you... "

Example, they ask: "How would you teach writing?" You say, "Here's how I teach the writing process with my students... Here is a copy of the graphic organizer we use... And this is a copy of student work." Then the interviewers pass it around the table and they Ooooh and Ahhhhh.

Another example-- you KNOW they'll ask you about your classroom management skills. So, have some pictures ready in your portfolio. You can say, "Here's a photo of my classroom behavior chart.....let me tell you how it works." And then you say, "Look at this picture of my classroom routine, posted on the wall.... Routines are important to my students because...."

There's a good eBook that has a Chapter on creating effective Teaching Portfolios. It also has Interview Tips, Common Teacher Interview Questions and Answers, And Advice on Finding Jobs. Maybe the eBook can help you. It's at: http://www.iwantateachingjob.com

Good luck!!!

P.S. In response to the person above who said they've never been asked to see their teaching portfolio----- True, interviewers don't always ask. But a portfolio gives candidates a definite edge because it PROVES that you know what you're talking about. Don't wait for an interviewer to ask for it-- put it out when you have evidence in there that relates to a question. It makes the whole interview more interactive and interesting.

Discuss It!
