I would start off first by visiting your local unemployment office as that's what they are there for to assist the unemployed worker. You get yourself registered and you can view their on-line jobs. There is always someone to assist you should you be in the need. Also, you can use their computer system and even do an on-line resume, if you don't have one. Sometimes they even have free computer classes. It's worth a try at least.

You can, with your customer service experience, check out the hospitals, hotels, schools, community colleges, libraries and while at the library you can also view their jobs posted. You may be a little too young for this, but having the experience, you could check out the banks, as they are always in need of tellers. They will train you providing you have at least 6 months of cash handling experience, which I'm sure you have had. It would be a good start in banking and you could always step up into other positions over the years with added experience. Just a thought there.

And, last but not least, you could be a nursing assistant. It requires a GED or high school diploma working in a nursing home doing some cleaning and other meager things. Changing sheets, washing the elderly, changing bed pans, mopping, etc. And usually they offer a certified class once you complete your training. A few options here for a good start. I would definitly try grad school and maybe get your masters in education and become a history or grammar teacher, there arent many jobs you can get with a degree in American Studies (unfortunatly) but you shouldnt feel down about it, you're still young!
