Architecture Work Experience

Javier Said:

need work experience in architecture?

We Answered:

Best bet would be to contact some local architecture/construction companies to volunteer some time with them. This will look excellent on both your work CV and academic profile (i.e. when applying for Uni).

Architecture Work Experience - does anyone know any good businesses to go to or have any experience with this?

We Answered:

Hello
As a starting point, I suggest looking at various parts of the Connexions website but do allow some time to research these sites and follow up contact details where appropriate. For a general overview relating to work experience see http://www.connexions-direct.com/itsyour…

Your school careers teacher and/or a local careers adviser can also provide information and guidance on relevant work experience - see local contact details at http://www.connexions-direct.com/. You haven’t said where you live but similar information is available for
http://www.careerswales.com/ (Wales)
https://www.careersserviceni.com/Culture… (Northern Ireland).

The Connexions website also has useful information on careers in architecture: see http://www.connexions-direct.com/jobs4u/… Add ‘Architecture’ to the search box for information on roles and responsibilities, entry requirements and working conditions. The ‘further details’ link leads to contact details for registration and professional bodies relevant for each of the UK countries. The relevant body in your area may have information about availability of work experience schemes.

If you need to check out the subject options that meet entry requirements for architecture courses at university, have a look at the UCAS website: http://ucas.com/students/coursesearch/. Select 'Architecture', either as a single subject or as a combined option, to bring up the list of available courses. Then click on any university of interest for more details, including entry requirements. If you still have queries, contact the university admissions office for clarification.

I hope these suggestions will be useful for planning your work
experience and future career.

Melanie Said:

does anyone know if any work experience with anything involving architecture is avaliable in kent/london?

We Answered:

I used to work for Costain- google them about their 'Building Experience' programme then get in touch. They used to sometimes give uni scholarships to people who did well on school age work experience.

Otherwise, look at the other big building and construction firms and google their websites.

Tanya Said:

Architecture Work Experience Help?

We Answered:

Yes I'm sure many architecture firms will be willing to give work placements. Just send off a letter and CV to as many places as possible in your area.

Don't be discouraged if they take a while to get back to you. Bear in mind that many architects are having a hard time right now because of the recession.

For my work experience I sent off letters to six places and only got one reply, however it was from a relatively large office and I really enjoyed it.

As I don't live near London, I can't really help with good placements.

But to answer your question on subjects to take at A-level, most universities say that they want a balance between the arts and sciences.

Some universities are more specific and want you to take Art or Maths. You don't have to take art however most universities will ask for a portfolio of recent work.

Relevant subjects to take would be: Maths Phyics and Art but an essay subject like English or History could be good to show communication skills. Geography/Buisness/Computing could also be arguably relevant for the different skill you would need for a career in Architecture.

It also depends whether you want to go down the BA or BSc route.

I took Maths Physics Georaphy and Art.

Edit: I'm sure design instead of art would be just fine. Anything so long as it shows your creativity! Although some unis prefer art to technology.
