Business Work Experience

Marcus Said:

How do i make my resume count if i dont have any work experience? (business major)?

We Answered:

Have you had any internships or work study jobs on campus? What about summer jobs? Have you ever done anything, paid or unpaid, that doesn't involve going to class? Have you done any volunteer work? A quick way to build your resume is to start volunteering with a charitable organization. Work is work...employers need not know if you are getting paid for said work or not.

If i want to get a job in business what work experience should i do?

We Answered:

you need to undergo sales training.

I was close to becoming a sales agent before so I had a sales training Toronto but it didn't suit me. you need to start from the bottom if you really want to be a sales manager. well, if you're an MBA grad or has impressive credentials, you might skip the agent part and take your chances. good luck!

Help with work experience, business based?

We Answered:

If you need business experience and you need it NOW then your quickest route is to volunteer. The quickest way to find a volunteer opening is to talk to people you know, and, look at Volunteers of America - www.voa.org for openings. Alternatively, you could seek an internship if you are qualified.

If you know someone in the field you are targeting - see if they can recommend you to whoever does the hiring for their company for entry-level work. If you get the foot in the door, you can sometimes advance through your hard work and willingness to learn.

Stating the obvious - if you need the work experience to get that job - then it might be hard to quickly get the job to get that work experience - which is why the other avenues - interning, volunteering, can be useful.

Darryl Said:

desperate for work experience in my major- business administration. How to start?

We Answered:

My suggesting is to start addressing this right away. You can ask your professors if they can suggest places you may get experience, paid or volunteer. On your resume, include all that you have done-I think it is fine to list projects or papers you did in school, relevant to the work you want to do. Also anything you have done that illustrates your leadership or management abilities. Check with organizations you may like to work for and ask if they have internship programs for students. Join a professional organization or student organization in your field.
If you are not able to find anything, don't worry. Do the best resume you can. People will understand that you are coming right from school.
Good luck!

Do most businesses like people in there business for work experience?

We Answered:

Some do, some don't.
When a company takes a person on for work experience they have to provide someone to keep a check on them and to oversee any work they do. If a company is already working with a minimum staffing level, then an extra person who has to be looked after can mean that a vital member of staff away is kept from doing their own job.
Companies that use a lot of machinery or power tools tend not to want untrained people hanging about because it poses a risk.

Graduated with 2:2 in Politics with Business Management, no work experience, what can I do?

We Answered:

I'm actually in the middle of putting together a press release about this ...

About half of all graduate schemes require a 2:2 or lower, whilst the other half requires a 2:1 or above. The fact that you only have a lower second degree means that you won't be able to apply for everything, but there are still absolutely tons of opportunities open to you.

Investment Banking is highly competitive and, as you've pointed out, has far more stringent criteria for entry. You should keep in mind that IB is not as glamorous as it's cracked up to be - you get paid an excellent wage but 90% never get promoted beyond their starting position, and the hours you work will be ludicrously steep - anywhere from 12 to 16 hours is not unusual.

There are plenty of opportunities outside of IB within the banking and finance sector, and you may want to consider other avenues - perhaps the Finance arm of a consumer goods company, for example?

I've attached a couple of links below which might give you some inspiration. Best of luck!
