College Work Experience

Mildred Said:

How do I turn my work experience into college credits?

We Answered:

I think it is only a selective few schools that will allow this. One that does seem to provide options for gaining credit for work experience is Empire State College, which is part of the SUNY system in New York. Check their website. Someone there might also be able to refer you to similar programs in other parts of the country, if not around the world.

Best online college that takes past college/work experience into account?

We Answered:

I currently attend Touro University International. I am in the military and have limited time to go to school so I've been taking classes online at this university. I don't know if they would transfer classes that are so old but they do evaluate experience to a degree. I don't have as much experience as you do but I did have some credits transferred for my degree. Hope this helps.

Do corporations care about your GPA if you have post-college work experience?

We Answered:

The only time anyone asked about my GPA after college was a graduate school I attended.

Employers do not ask your GPA. They are more interested that you attended and graduated college.

Tracey Said:

What's better work experience or college experience?

We Answered:

While you are learning something useful, hopefully, you will also learn how to work in the real world and gain experience at the same time.

I will share something with you though. The business I am in now was introduced to me by someone that dropped out of the seventh grade. He is now working this business full time and owns a very nice home on about 32 acres of land. He has a new Corvette and a Humv2.

Now I’m not saying to drop out of school and go into online marketing. He had a pretty rough time of it until he got into this business. He didn’t make a lot of money right away. What I am saying is that education is a good thing. I have a little college under my belt, but not enough to be worth anything.

I became a truck driver and I have done okay, but not good enough. Now I am working in this business while still driving trucks so I can get out of the truck at the end of the year. Would I go to college if I could do it all over again? Yes, I believe I would.

What is the business I’m in? http://www.mywaiora.com/200534. It may not be for you. No big deal. But then again, it could be. You never know.

Do employers look at college education more so than work experience?

We Answered:

Employers basically look to see that a person has what is needed for the job. Very often these days, "new grad" jobs want both a degree and some work experience - which your son has, even if it's not in his field.

Employers almost always want the education. The only time this isn't true is when a person is very experienced at something, has years of proven on-the-job skills - and even then, they want the education.

So your son should be fine - except that the job market is so tight right now. Have you been following the news? Unemployment is very high.

• What changes have you had to make in your life to make the college experience work for you?

We Answered:

I had to put my personal life on hold a number of times./

Lying about work experience on college applications?

We Answered:

Don't lie on your application because if they trace it back you will be rejected right away. Who knows if they do back round checks? Don't you want to say you got in to that college because of what you did do rather than what you lied about? Be yourself, then everything will be fine.
