Connexions Work Experience

Oscar Said:

Problems with work experience placement?

We Answered:

Phone your school, or go in a speak to the appropriate person, it seems that only they can make the final decision so make sure to get it from the horse's mouth and not from friends/hearsay.

Is there any work experience with a Photographer available?

We Answered:

Why don't you contact photographers on your own. Don't just rely on others to help you - you can do this type of thing yourself. Do a little research on the photographers in your area - they will be listed. Find the type of photographer whose type of work you are interested in - wedding, portrait, commercial, fashion, fine art. And then call their office and explain that you are looking for an internship/work experience, found them through the internet/phone book, and ask if they would consider taking you on. It's really quite easy actually - why not give it a shot yourself. Don't feel that just because you don't have any connections that you aren't able to do it.

I want some work experience in retail.?

We Answered:

Maybe you can try asking anyone you come into contact with. Friends, neighbours, relatives, teachers, people in the pub, shops you visit. Read local papers, the parish magazine, look in the small ads at the Post Office or local shop.

You are already thinking on the right lines for something seasonal. Maybe a garden centre in the Spring, or a park, pool or public gardens. Try the local council; they might be happy for free labour. Visit a local trading estate, shopping mall or whatever.

Good luck.

using a crossover cable to share internet, will msn and everything work? Your experience?

We Answered:

Will work just fine. I used to do this at the house back in the day when i had dialup. You are just sharing internet, not corporate protocols. Internet is internet. The easiest (but not cheapest) way would just get a router. Routers have internal hardware firewalls and stuff that makes internet more secure and you can hardwire like 7 computers to it, even more if you use wireless. You shouldnt have a problem though, fine tuning the settings can get annoying though.

Work experience in media in Manchester ready for uni?

We Answered:

The BBC and Granada must get absolutely inundated with requests for work experience so your best bet would be to try to find a smaller, less well-known organisation. Think about smaller channels (e.g. Channel M), independent production companies, also local radio stations and newspapers (The big one is the Manchester Evening News but, if you get any other local papers - including free ones - in your part of Greater Manchester or know of ones in other parts of Manchester, try them). Work experience with the BBC may sound impressive but all experience is useful. As well as having more chance of getting offered work experience, in a smaller company you have more opportunity to see every aspect and function of the company (because they'll probably all be working in the same office rather than in different departments) and they may be more willing to let you do more than simply make the tea and do the photocopying. I did work experience with a small, local newspaper (not in Manchester). I had no previous experience but, after shadowing and getting advice from their journalists, they let me go out and do interviews independently and write articles which were published in the paper - I'd had no luck trying the likes of the BBC and Granada but think I actually got better experience where I ended up.
