Degree Based On Work Experience

Regina Said:

This question is only for people who have earned a degree based on just work experience?

We Answered:

Those people were scammed. No accredited (that means real) college grants a degree solely based on work experience. Very few accredited schools even grant college credit for it.

Melanie Said:

Could I get a job in Computer Science if I don't major in it? (Based on work experience alone)?

We Answered:

You can get a job in IT (computers) without having majored in Comp Sci, but it will be more difficult.

If that is your plan, I certainly recommend doing whatever you can to acquire some real job experience while in school. The easiest route to doing this may be to look around campus for part-time positions; for example, doing some programmer work for biomedical studies, since your other focus is medicine. This experience will also help you clarify whether you'd be happier working in IT vs medicine, or -- as in the biomedical studies job -- perhaps at the intersection of the two.

This is, in fact, approximately the route I took to get into IT, and I found that I liked doing it for a living so well that I changed my career plans entirely.

Courtney Said:

Anyplace to get a degree based on work experience?

We Answered:

A degree is more than experience. It demonstrates the ability to research and perform critical analysis. I once thought it was "a piece of paper" until I went to Uni at about the same career point as you, and discovered otherwise.

However, make it easy on yourself and go for a course that is closest to your experience and you'll probably walk away with First Class Honours, because on-the-job experience is what the kids don't have. And a First is a very marketable commodity!

i am looking university in newyork from where i can earn becholors degree based on work experience?

We Answered:

I'd look into Empire State College. They grant college credits based on work and life experience.

Their webpage is www.esc.edu

And yes, they are a fully accredited university in New York State plus they have online classes.

Agnes Said:

anyone ever heard of getting a degree based on your work experience is this legit?

We Answered:

There are outfits that will give you a degree based on work experience. The degrees are usually not recognized by any of the accrediting bodies that make sure degrees are legitimate. They're also not recognized by employers as a valid degree -- so they won't do you any good when looking for a job.
If it makes you feel better to have a piece of paper that says you have a degree in something, even though the piece of paper is worthless, go for it.
Otherwise...work hard, go to school, and get a real degree.
